A friend just removed a jackpot from a late 70's lincoln and it has an electrical connection/sensor on the side of the housing up by the front pinion bearing. We are curious what this is for. Any 9" experts out there that can answer this for us?
Relic's right on! Poor attempt at traction control. Caused alot of chattering in the rearend when engaged.
The jackpot? I've heard the center section called a lot of things, pig, pumpkin, etc. But jackpot's a new one. You learn something every day. PS be sure that's a 9", some of those cars used a similar diff that's not interchangeable and not aftermarket supported. Good luck with the project
No ECM in the any of the '70's Lincs. Just the first and second generation Dura-Spark ignition. The old gray box on the fender well with the pigtails coming out of it. Speed sensor would have been related to Anti-Locks brakes. Still a few years off in the F-L-M lines. But your close. The speed sensor in the later ones for Rear ABS looked the same. This ones for the the Sure Trac system.
The Sure-Track controller is up in the dash, near the glovebox. About the size of an 8-track tape c***ette. I wouldn't call it a computer.
Thanks guys for all the responses. The rear is actually a 9 3/8" rear. What does the Sure Trac actually do? Does it actually lock the rear? Hey Shifty, we been callin' the center sections- jackpots, pumpkins since I was a teenager. Must be a Baltimore thing
from a Ford brochure; This new feature allowed all four wheels to be controlled through a hydraulically actuated "Sure Track" system, which prevented wheel lock. Man, first I learn on the HAMB that some of you southern boys called what we in So Cal call a Pumpkin or Third member, a "Chunk", and now a "Jackpot". Any other off the wall names?
Down here we call it a chunk or RGNP. (ring gear and pinion) Have also heard hogshead or just plain guts. -Abone.
Alot of the 9-3/8" rears in the big Lincolns have tapered roller bearings at the axle ends and the ends (housing and axles) are different than the 9"rs....especially if the rearend has disc brakes (don't get this rearend confused with the once highly sought after disc brake equipped 9" rear from the Granada/Monarch/Versailles). The 9-3/8" rears are an orphan, they're usually too wide for the stuff we work on and parts aren't too easy to get. Add that in with limited gear selection and your better off leaving them where they lay or cashing them in with the next load of s****. -Bigchief.
... I've heard, and used, third member, pumpkin, center section and jackpot. I've given away quite a few of those Lincoln rears because of them bein' oddballs.
