6-12 hours at the most, don't have to use it to sleep, so I guess we will go the trailer option.

As low as your sedan in your avatar is, you could buy an old Greyhound bus and put it in the underneath luggage compartment - i saw that done with a race car.

This works for me. Can pull a trailer at the same time.

I build trucks for a living. Could build you a rollback any size you want. Steel or aluminum.

Ya know the "shoot the moon" scene in the new Dukes of Hazzard movie, and the one in Lethal Weapon? We build those trucks back in the early 80s.

How about a 73-87 60, 65, or 70 Series Chevrolet/GMC? Fairly common, cheap, simple and reliable as hell. Some had air brakes even. We recently got a C-65 rollback with a 12,000 pound winch for about $3500.

Cabs are probably interchangeable with the earlier 60-66 era of trucks. You may get 10 miles to the gallon at best though.

I stretch trucks to. So if you came across a rig with a sleeper I could stretch the frame and install a car hauler on the back.

Or find a modern ch***is, and we could put an older body ontop of it. Alot of people are using RV ch***is'. Actually RV manufacturers have left over stock they can not use. They come as a running, driving ch***is with no body. They just have a seat and all the controls to drive the frame around.

Many moons ago I came across a guy in Florida pulling a home made fifth wheel type camper trailer with his model A. He'd welded a full cage inside and had a goose neck ball sticking out the chopped roof. It was powered by a big block Chevy i think.

  11. Ya might just get an old ton truck and build yourself a ramp truck. That way no one could call it that trailer name and you could carry on a trad vibe when crossing the big bad united states.

They do make toy haulers for hauling smaller cars they run in the 80 to 100K range. I can't imagine spending more on a trailer than on my car, but I never have owned a really nice car.

No one has mentioned the cost of maintenance on gas vs diesel. I can do three oil changes on a gas vs one on a diesel.
Price the fuel filters, cost of fuel injectors, collaterall parts such as starter, waterpump, glowplugs, not to mention what the cost of rebuilding the turbo on the diesel if it takes a dump.
I'll keep my carburated, paid for, 25 year old dually

A coworker was just telling me about her brother's motorhome that may be up for sale. She says that the motorhome part needs a lot of work but the truck runs ok.
If the price is right I'm thinking seriously about buying it and cutting the motorhome part off or down and putting a car hauler bed on the back. the total investment would probably be less than the tilt bed trailer that I am thinking about building.
This one most likely wouldn't be used to take one of my rigs to shows but for going after the cars and parts an pieces that I always seem to be buying or trading for. If I can keep enough of the motorhome part of it to have a place to sleep so much the better.

I like the diesel lovers,I like them when they pull up to a stop light beside me and blow black smoke in my window ,I like when they put some stupid exhaust on them and they sound like they are in a well, I don't like them when they leak in my driveway ,gell up in the winter and I have to give them rides.
My worn out 4.3 5 speed Chebby pickup tows my 3100 lb car and trailer just fine for a vehicle with 225,000 miles. If it quits I'll buy another one for about the same as sales tax is on a new diesel.
If I wanted a diesel I would buy a REAL TRUCK ( PETERBUILT) not a beefed up pickup.

Here's the best I've seen. There was a guy I vintage raced with. He bought a Cl*** "A" motor home that had been hit in the rear. Luckily, the bathroom and one of the bedrooms was mid-ship. He tore the body off of the back, put a rear par***ion in, added ramps on the back, and had a hauler to transport his car in, as well as a place to send the night in comfort. As I remember, he had less than $1000 in the whole thing.:D
