Hello guys, I have a 42? Ford rear transverse spring that has 48" eye center to eye center hangers on the rear end it came from. I want to mount this spring on a narrowed 9" rear end. The spring hangers have to be 45" or less eye center to eye center. Has anyone cut a spring and had new eyes rolled to narrow it (by a spring shop). What problems may I encounter other than the obvious, eg t******* the helper leaves. Your thoughts and experience is greatly appreciated.

Why not just take it to a spring shop and have them cut and re roll the eyes or just have a new main leaf made.

I was not sure if cutting the spring and rolling new eyes was a possibility. So I should be able to use all the helper leaves except the first one without t*******? if I had it narrowed by 3" or so?

    Yes
A good spring shop can do all that for you. Thats how they make their $$ as for the helper leafs I would probably take the next one out and see how it sits then remove other ones until you get it where you want it

I shortened my model a rear spring last week by 1 5/16" each side. Measured 1 5/16" around the eye and cut it on an angle as the original eye. Drilled a 3/4" hole in a heavy flat strap, welded a 3/4" piece of round stock in, slid the spring eye over it and tack welded the eye to plate and round stock to keep it from slipping when forming the new eye. Put the strap in a vise, heated the spring eye and bent it around until the end ****ed against the main body, let it cool slow, cut and smoothed the spot welds. Was a lot easier than I was expecting.
