have you rebuilt the carb? Sounds like a lean condition

says "new edelbrock carb" might need to set the float levels, might want to look at the ignition advance curve using a timing light. Sometimes aftermarket distributors don't have as much advance built in and need to start out with more initial advance. The only way to really know is to check the "total" advance, with a dial or readout type timing light or a timing tape on the damper. you want somewhere in the mid 30s total advance when you rev it up (vacuum hose disconnected if it has one).

  4. The Excellerator pump is putting out too much fuel when you step on it. Reajust it to do less fuel.

sounds to me like the opposite...the accelerator pump is not doing enough. But retarded ignition timing will give the same symptoms.

Try the idle mixture screws. Had the same problem with my 440. Messed with the idle mixture screws until I got it right. Start out at 1 1/2 turns out then 1 3/4. And some lighter springs for the distributor from Mr. Gasket also helped. Put a vacuum gauge on it too and tune until you get max vacuum.

Gotta agree with 440, never seen a Carter or Eddie that squirted too much. They do have a problem with not enough sometimes. That sounds like your problem.
BTW, they aren't "wide blocks." All 318's and 313's and 303's etc. are the same block sizes, the newer style heads are just narrower. Even 340 and 360 use the same size blocks.

But some timing in that thing. At least 10 degrees, no wonder it's lazy, it wants some spark!

Yep, since 'getting on it seems to help the situation, sounds like it needs to be advanced a little.............

Also look at distributor cap ign. wire towers for corrosion and ignition wires. One of these can be breaking down under engine load(or take off)and act fine at cruise speed and will cause your listed problem. .
