i've been wondering whether or not i should look for a different engine for my '41 Plymouth project. I've been planning on using the engine i used to have in my 67 Cougar, which is a 351W/392 and has way more power than I know what to do with. A couple have people have told me it'd be stupid to have a Ford motor in a mopar, which i was kind of already thinking. The problem is as a college boy I don't have the money to build a Mopar mill that will have anywhere near the power my 392 has. So I guess I just want opinions. Should I sacrifice power to keep it all Mopar? Or should it just be a really fast mongrel?
I am a Mopar guy, but since you are on a limited budget, and you have an engine available, use it until you can get a nice Mopar to put in it
Build what you can afford...it's hot rodding. How many people out there put a SBC in their '32 Fords? exactly.... "Should I sacrifice power to keep it all Mopar?" --->does it matter, fast is fast, right. Would a 351 w/392 be considered "Traditional"? Who cares, if you've got it toss it in, the beauty with the older cars, if you have long enough you could save up and build a sweet "Early" Small hemi with all the goo-gaaaaaas and wow the people again. Do it, build it, learn.
i love my mopar mill, and it's what i got. So it is now in my Ford. 61Falcon Gasser with a rowdy 415LA, 727 slushbox, 8 3/4 mopar rear, and a 65 CHEVY G10 front axle. - real bastard child of a car, but it's mine. If you cant trade/sell the ford then use it, but expect to spend a little more than normal making it work.
Just don't forget you also need to swap in a rear end with emergency brakes. Your e-brake is on the tranny.
your only an idiot if you listen to the naysayers and dont do it if they think a ford powerplant dont belong in a mopar fuck em it aint their car
I go with the majority. Blue oval baby. I'd live to put a 392 Ford in my Merc when the SBC expires..... or before.
I am so tired of what people think and care. Do what works when you have more money put a mopar, jet engine, hydrogen bomb back in it. Make it work and have fun. My 2 cents
Had a ford in a chevy once, had fun with all the wanabees telling me what I should have done. Only problem I did have was the oil pan, could not find a rear sump to clear the steering so I had to rework oil pan to clear steering. Rember there is a line up of those to tell you what you should have done, no matter what. Do it and have fun.
Damnit! I thought this was gonna be one of those fun threads, but it turns out to be a legit one. Run what you've got, who gives a rat's ass what anyone else thinks? Plus it'll fry the parts store dudes remaining brain cell
Yer not an idiot, I personally wouldn't do it but wouldn't judge you one way or another. I would go Mopar powered. Maybe an old red ram hemi...at least it's not another 350/350.
whats gonna go in the cougar? i am usually not a big fan of taking a "runner" off the road to feed a project. worst case scenario you end up with 2 cars that dont work. what kinda mods are you gonna have to look at? engine and tranny from the mercury into the custom....will the manifolds or headers clear? will the radiator from the merc work? you gonna have to raise floors for the ford trans? driveshaft...gonna need a new one? rear end gonna work? will your steering parts all clear the new stuff? i know its "hot rodding" and nothing fits...thats what makes it cool. being on a budget those are just somethings to consider before tearing anything apart. judging by the responses i dont think anyone here really cares what makes it move...hell i would even give you props to have it rollin with a GASP SBC. our little social circle is a much bigger fan of getting out and driving the wheels off something than keeping it all one brand. good luck and take some pictures so we can see and learn. drew.
Lots of folks don't recognize anything but a sbc anyway. Your car, do it your way. Engine swaps are almost as old as hot rodding itself! Is the other car wrecked? Temporary swap? I hear Dodge 360's are still reasonable price wise. Might be able to sell Ford stuff to buy what you want.
I agree with DOC, it's your car...do anything you want to it. I have a Buick in my Chevrolet...why? because I wanted to.
I put a 350 olds in my 41 ply.Looks good runs fine and I'm not ashamed to open my hood. It's my car,My way.
This thread answers my dilemma about possibly putting in the Poncho mill that I have in a '47 Dodge truck that I'm considering....thanks....
Put "mopar" stickahs on the valve covers, likely enough the ones that are complaing won't know the difference... just tell them it's a 318 - poly head cross!
I had a similar problem.I have a warmed over B engine that needed crank work (drilling for full pressure) and it was gona be gone a long time, almost a year. About the same time a freeby came up, AMC 4banger/5sp. Will didn't want to go that route, but it was free, and almost next door. Well guess what, its in, running and the B crank just came back from the states, and I have a runner to drive until I get the B done. And I might just sell it cause the Jeep engine is a real runner. Its yours, make your self at home. Some one will always say, if it was mine I wouda done it this way. LOL, Iceman
It's a 351...it's fairly modern and will most likely be very reliable for you, and you say it's powerful as well. It's probably the limited GOOD Info outlets we have as auto enthusiasts. Fake reality crap like the Pinks shows, Past Time, etc., but I'm getting more and more annoyed with this brand stuff...Chevy is the best, No Mopar is, No Ford is...in the end you have a block of metal with holes in it, and metal pistons in those holes, being turned by a metal crank, spinning a metal chain that turns a metal cam opening and closing metal valves...who cares what factory it came out of decades ago? It's what YOU make it. Am I right?
