I pay $550/mo for a warehouse in an industrial park. I live in the office part of it. The office part is about 700sq ft. A stand-up shower cost me $50 from craigslist. Friend gave me a small water heater. Plumber friend hooked it up for a 12-pack of PBR. Water is paid by landlord. I have a ****ter, a sink, a small kitchenette thingy, decent sized bedroom & closet same size as bedroom. Industrial Central Air unit in Office. Shop is big enough for about 4-5 cars, but only 3 with all my **** packed in with room to work around. Elec bill is same as small house or apartment around here. TV is a $40 DTV Converter Box, Internet is a $40/mo broadband USB Modem. Shop has 110 & 220 outlets, two breaker boxes, 2 industrial window unit air conditioners, two roll up doors, 16' ceiling, my own loading dock, & 5 minutes from town. Not a bad deal for me since I live a pretty simple life, no kids, etc. I just consider my cars as my priority. I acquire more tools & parts almost daily, so there's no stopping now. Neighbor lives in his warehouse as well. He's got a full apartment in his with stove/oven, etc. His shop is twice the size of mine for $850/mo. Another neighbor has a music studio in his warehouse, lives in there, mostly offices with room for 2 cars inside, about $650/mo. Landlord could care less, he's getting rich from the 20 or so other units he rents out. Here's an old pic of the shop, apartment section is on right side, behind all the old car parts...
One of my customers restored and mantains a beutiful criss craft run about in a very ****py hood,no problems, no plans to move either!mmm, weird, not for me!
Apartments aren't so bad. When I had my '65 Mustang I lived in an apartment. I worked on it outside in the parking lot, nobody said anything besides asking if I needed help (lol). I just kept my stuff in the trunk or in my house when I was done. The only problems I had were people breaking into my car because it obviously didn't have an alarm. They ended up stealing a mini vacuum and a plate....big score.
I lived in a flat in Pretoria for about ten years. It had a single lock-up garage with a light but no power sockets. The Morris was my only car at the time, but the location of the building was such that I could go two weeks without using the car. I didn't have much of an income during that part of my life, so all my elaborate plans progressed very slowly, if at all. I nevertheless had a dining room full of parts. I remember having a Mini front subframe that I was trying to figure out how to make an IRS out of. I spent days staring at the thing before concluding that it wouldn't work the way I wanted. But then I'd get a different idea ... But I had my drawing board set up in an airy enclosed balcony, with my computer on one side and some well-stocked bookshelves on the other. I produced quite a lot of art in that time. I hardly get the chance any more.
yea 19 and building a 55' pickup out of my front driveway(yea its the only space..)It sat without windows for about a month and thats really the only time not having a garage REALLY ****ED
Now that I am attending college at McPherson this is my situation now (dorm not apartment) but most of the other auto resto students i have talked to have storage garages around town that are like 40 bux a month. dont have the jack quite yet though maybe one of these days.
Dude, can't you buy a whole city block for like 10 bucks right now. You could have several garages then. ha ha ha
