It's so great to see all these incredible photos... Wow, it really brings back some enchanting memories of my visit to this Rumblers shindig a few years ago... The collection of cars (and trucks) featured in the pics demonstrates just how wide of a variety of hot rod machinery shows up for this festive event... And there's plenty of colorful characters who make the show and add a flavor to the day that you'd be hard pressed to find anywheres else on the entire planet... I'm sure that all the booked-in bands did a bang-up job of performing for the enthusiastic crowd-- The bands are always an absolute blast... Glad to see that the Rumblers club prevailed despite the area's weather forecasters predicting doom 'n' gloom-- Congratulations to all involved for making it a spectacular show... "The Doc" (Celebrity Drag Racing Authority & Visionary)...

I had always heard about this show.....and had always wanted to go. Something about NYC, a city that is SO old and yet always on the cutting edge, made me want to go there and see what the Rumblers could do with a couple of blocks of that high priced real estate. First off, they get rid of the cars that are not acceptable. There was a lot of signage stating there will be NO PARKING ON SATURDAY and the Cars will be Towed. That did not stop some people from leaving their cars there. Well, about 8am the Rumblers take matters into their own hands and start moving the cars out themselves. Thanks to using a jack and some auto dollys, the gang simply push the cars into the next parking area where the spectators park. So the guy that comes back to find his car gone, will most likley have some strange sensation when he sees his car parked in the lot 1 block down.

The weather was pretty bad. Hurricane Danny threatened to wash the show out, but the storm just brushed NYC and by noon the rain had stopped. So all those people that thought the show was "rained out" - it does NOT happen with the Rumblers. The show takes place under the BQE (Brooklyn Queens Expressway) and is always covered up. So please, dont ever use that excuse to not show up again. Friday there were already some hot rods there - like the Screamin Demons from Ohio who made the trek-13 HOURS. Again - all you lame people from 40 minutes away who did not want to drive your car in the rain........THESE guys show what it is all about - DRIVING!!!!

It seemed that around 830am the cars started to show up and by 930 it seemed the parking lot across the street was completely full of hot rods and cl***ics. At around 10am they let all the cars come in and the lot quickly filled up. Vendors were placed in the middle of the aisles and the cars all parked on the outside edges. By noon the place was really jumping and everyone seemed to be having a good time. Since the show takes place in the middle of Brooklyn, there are locals that show up to see all the cars as well. This includes the local skateboarders that usually use the lot to perfect their skills. I asked some of the skate kids what they thought about the hot rods taking over their hang out.........some thought it was cool, while others gave non commital grunts and shrugs - typical teenagers right?

The quality of the cars was mixed. Some were real beaters and some were top quality show cars. But ALL the drivers seemed to respect each others rides and all were having a good time. If anyone was getting bored with the hot rods, right across the street there were bands playing all day long. The bands were: Rehab For Quitters, Tombstone Brawlers, Homeward Bound, Memphis Morticians, Turbo A.C.s, and Sasquatch and the Sick-A-Billys. I gotta tell ya, the Sasquatch show was pretty crazy. I have always heard the legends of CBGBs and NYC ******** punk scene, but I had never experienced it first hand. I went to many a punk rock show in my youth, but always in St. Louis where the crowds were quite tame compared to what I saw at the Union Pool that night. 200 people were packed into a room that held 50. AND they were able to have a mosh pit going as well. Sasquatch and the Sick A Billys were an amazing site to behold, giving as well as getting. Everytime they were rained on with a beer or ice from the crowd they would throw something back or push people in the front back with their steel toed boots. Sasquatch was hit in the forehead with a crumpled up Pabst Blue Ribbon can. It looked like it drew blood, yet he never even flinched. Such is the way of the real rock and rollers of NYC.

It was great to meet people I had talked to in the past like Brian Darwas - the guy that made the outstanding do***entary - Road to Bonneville. He is a member of the Rumblers and he was there selling his latest creation The Devil At Your Feet - a nice look at The Alter Boys from the East Coast and the Choppers from the West Coast. I had briefly met Roger Miret at the Lonestar Round Up, but was able to talk at length with him at the end of the show and I was blown away by how down to earth he is. Sometimes when you meet icons in the punk rock or hot rod community, you feel a little let down because they seem aloof. Not this guy. He was totally cool and I look forward to seeing him down the road at another event. And the former club prez.......Lenny. Here is a guy that seems to have a **** load of stuff going on all at once, and yet he was taking the time to make sure I was taken care of. He made sure my wife and I were looked in on all day long. I have heard of southern hospitality, but the northern hospitality that was shown by Lenny and the rest of the Rumblers is gonna be tough to beat.

So to say there was a lot going on this weekend in Brooklyn is an understatement. I tried to capture a bit of the excitement on video for an upcoming Vintage Torque release, but there is no way to capture the magic of that show unless you are there. If you want an excuse to head to the big apple, just head over on the weekend the Rumblers are having the annual Kustom Kills - Hot Rod Thrills and you will NOT be disappointed.

Wow, John.......seems like you liked the show! Thanx for all of the kind words about the show, and about the guys in the club, including Myself...alot of work goes into getting the show together every year, and its all worth it! It looks like a good time was had by ALL! If you make it out next year you should make sure you stay until Monday, and join us on our trek to Coney Island, for some Nathan's hot dogs, a ride (or 2, or 3) on the Cyclone, and check out the Side Show, it's become sort of a tradition for us.....We're glad the trip seemed to be worth you while, travelling all the way from Iowa!
