Hello all! First time here, and looking for a place to get more information. I just picked up a 1940 Pontiac Deluxe Six from someone I used to work with. It was a barn find in the 80's that her dad found and always wanted to restore, but passed away right after he started working on it and collecting parts. He moved it into his garage and it just sat there for another 20 years, but at least it was out of the barn. The driver fender is off, and it's in where the back seat is supposed to be. The car is pretty much intact with all of the parts and options, but there is some rot along the outside edges of the floorboard and the driver floor pan. The worst part of the whole thing is the outer edges of the floors. It even has the underseat heater in it still. It still has the original 6 in it, and it's not frozen, and neither is the 3sp trans. It even rolls pretty good with air in the tires, steering is nice and tight. I see alot of parts and floor panels for the 41-48 pontiacs, but nothing for the 40's. what changed? Can I used the floor panels with some mods? What about the suspension? He has another set of rear leafs for it, but what about the parts for the front upper and lowers, etc? Is there a good source for them? Does it cross over to other years/makes/models? What about rear glass? He cut some steel to fill the holes, and there is a broken one still in the drivers side. I could probably get it out and use it as a template if needed. Thanks for the input!
Welcome to the HAMB. That's a pretty decent project. Can't really answer any of your questions but someone will be along shortly who can.
You might also try other 1940 GM fastbacks, Chev, Olds, etc. I don't belong myself (I'm too cheap) but I have friends who belong to POCI, since the 40 is pretty scarce they may have some reference materials and floor pan sources.
That's what his kids were saying about it. They heard from him there are only 3 known in the state of Wisconsin, and this is one of them. Not sure how true that is, maybe just this model?
Nice score, I can't really help you out with the metal work and interchangeability. But these are fairly rare. I'v had 2 of them one a coupe, and my current ride a 4 door which is all original. A good source of parts is Kanter auto. Also I have a catalog from here in California called California Pontiac Restorationswww.pontiacparts.net Good luck, when I take the sedan to a show I constantly have people around it just because you never see them.
Thank you! Those are the kind of places I was looking for! Prices are a little up there on parts for these things, eh? So, I see sheetmetal out there, but it shows 41-48. What is the difference from 40 to 41? http://www.c2cfabrication.com/store/index.php?manufacturers_id=20 Maybe I'll just get a bead roller and fab some of my own? -Mark
California Pontiac Restorations Just saying. I've bought from them (no not cheap) but you can call and talk to someone direct that knows what they are talking about. Very fast service also.
Nice find! We've had our "40 Pontiac Deluxe on the road since 1978. And it is still puttin' along. Our '40 is a street rod. You might try Chevy's of the 40's. The Pontiac-Oakland Club International would be a good source for parts and advice for your restoration. James Patterson is the tech advisor for '39-'42 Pontiacs. His e-mail is: AntoqueCarParts@msn.com. I can help, also. Catch me here or dcrowder40@yahoo.com
I'm not a Pontiac expert by any stretch, but I've never seen one of those. Looks very cool. Just don't street rod it. Fix the rust, lower it, put it back together, and drive the hell out of it. Thats what I'd do anyway... Kevin Ooltewah Speed Shop
Okay, I went out last night and took a real good look at her and the parts that he bought for it. Doors are completely solid and the windows work. Rear windows are actually still there, but have some sheet metal covering them up. Driver side is busted, but still there. Looks like they both go up and down also. The inner and outer rockers that he bought for them are for a 1940 chevy, and look like they will go right in and match right now. Good news for me, 40 chevy body parts might help me out with the body. Figured out why he took off the driver front fender. Inner fender is basically junk and I might no be able to even use it for a template to make one. Any one have an extra one laying around?! Also, I'm looking around for pics of the inside of the trunk. There is some sheet metal up against the inside of the back wheel wells. Did these have inner fenders in the back, or just the cardboard ones? Maybe they were just filling a hole to make it warmer. Once I get it into my garage I can look at it some more, but that'll be in a month or so. I have to get my brothers 1966 cutlass out of there, and it's just about done. But I'm not going to leave it outside in the shed at all, gotta get it in the garage. Right now, I'm going to start looking for parts that I am going to need to continue on it. Thanks everyone! -Mark
The model # is stamped on the firewall tag, if it's a 25 series it's the same smaller body as the Chevy.
