It's a 1939 big truck frontend. Whatcha gonna do with those big bones when you get it apart?

  3. Neal..going to use them on my rod..or at least try to..will have to bend the perch hangers parallel to each other so I can mount the spring to..overall I'm not sure yet..I got to get the dam things off..are you interested in them..?

no they wont. he cut the end of the nut off and left the still threaded taper on it.

center punch the perch pin and drill it up to about the pin size until you can get the inner tapered part of the nut off.

another option if you have a good welder is to weld another nut onto what's left of the old one you cut off and put an impact wrench on it.

then you can put the thing in a press to get the perch pin out.

if you don't understand what you did, this is a picture of the whole nut, you only cut off the straight sides and left the threaded taper on the perch pin:

  7. Waste of time, listen to Harrison above, just cut the axle and perch through the perch boss, all you will save is the bones anyway.

Find someone who knows how to run a torch and CAREFULLY whittle the nut away. It takes finess but I have done it on a couple pins that would not budge.

I'd drill through what is left of the taper with maybe a quarter inch drill, and try to spin it out with a drift or cold chisel, then go to a press, if you have one, or use a torch to heat the axle to expand it, and drive the rest of the sucker out.

ok i think a 30 ton press would just rip the threads right out of the nut, but if i was going to drill anything it would be the bolt down to where the nut ends and then heat and press, 30 min maybe with the drilling, heating and pressing and your done, on to more fun stuff..lol

This whole operation has been a disaster from day one. The common bolt shoved in the axle instead of the original Ford axle bolt was a good clue to poor maintenance and make-do mechanicing. It is a 39-41 Truck front axle assembly.
You wasted a lot of time and effort for nothing.

One question to any guy who knew anything about early Fords would have stopped you from slicing and dicing and whatever on that junk, or at least pointed you in the RIGHT direction with a knowledgeable picture of what the parts should be and should look like and how they are put together and the fact about the top and bottom tapered seats in the bone knuckles and other trivia like that.

There are so many front ends from cars and pickups, good usable stuff, I don't know why anyone goes through this nonsense with some junk big truck stuff.

is the bolt tapered also? the cone nut does not screw into the perch boss correct? if thats correct, then cut off the head of the bolt and press it out the opposite direction

The steering arm is welded to the axle to make a trailer axle out of it. That was most likely before it got in the wreck.

You can cut through the axle and perch boss with a chopsaw pretty easy if you have someone hold the end of the wishbone. That or a pocket full of cutoff blades in your angle grinder. Cut a slot along each side of the web and knock the center out an the other pieces should come out with a bit of heat and a hammer.

The bones won't fit a normal car or commercial axle, the height of the casting is too big and the perch bolt hole is too large. If you tried hard enough you may be able to adapt the ends to a axle, but that seems like an awful lot of work since regular bones aren't that hard to find.
I've got a three sets of big truck bones, not much good for anything but a tow bar unless your willing to change the ends out.

  20. I going to scrap them...this thread had lots of great backyard theories...so maybe I'll try to get the backing plates off and the spindles...any ideas!!!!
