what are the torque and horsepower capacities of a stock banjo rearend?some say more torque than HP?..just wondering..
Depends what year. I just blew up the rear end in my Model A, stock rear end with a mild hopped up 4 banger, maybe 50-55hp
i got a blown flathead and twisted the axles like twizelers just rebuild it and i hope it works no more neutral drops for me
Yep..replacing axles and cluster gears is very "traditional" alright. I used to do it on Sunday so I could drive to school Monday. The stock axles will usually hold up with a SBC, for example,if you are careful. They'll twist or rip the keyway out behind a stock flathead if you pop the clutch. In the long run I suspect you'll be better off with late model axles and the early backing plates retained. Nobody will be the wiser. Just a thought.
I think driver factor at launch can be more relevant than banjo rear strength, like any rear end. I drove a 32 5W for 20 years with original rear and popped the clutch many times with no problem. I have twisted the axle keys on others, and cracked a case once.
I agree.."popping the clutch' is a subjective term I suppose. Let's just say the more abruptly you apply torque to an early Ford axle the greater the chance of at least twisting a key-way. As engines increased in torque output, axles were redesigned to take the increase. My opinion, for what it's worth, is that if you like to routinely smoke the tires, you will replace axles.
