Let me start by saying... I hate these type of threads (without pics), but I need some HAMBer input.

40's really aren't my style, but being an "old school" hot rod caught my attention. Anyways, I came across a 40 cpe by accident and wasn't able to snap any pictures. The car is ROUGH mainly due to the fact that it sat outside for 20+ Pennsylvania winters. However the car is pretty much intact and was set up with a SBC and a 3 speed in the 60's. The floors/trunk are rotted out but it is definetely salvagable. I know these are popular cars but I have never really paid attention to their prices. I know what "beat" model a's go for and was just wondering what people thought on this. Like I said, this is a MAJOR project but it has a lot of good pieces that would be a nice start.

Any thoughts on prices? The owner knows that 40's are desirable when they are finished but really doesn't know cars in general and wants me to make him an offer...

How could a 40 coupe not be your style? Sit em low in the front, paint em shiny black, and they are beautifull.

You can get just about any re-pop piece you need including sheet metal for these cars, so don't freak out if it is a rusty pile. Just go buy it.

I've priced a few rusty '37 -'39 coupes around here (Minnesota). Most of the time even a fairly rough one with no drivetrain is going for at least 6K if it's mostly complete with ***le. I'd imagine a '40 would go for somewhat more since they're more popular.

It's not that 40's aren't my style, it's just that my wallet normally doesn't allow me to like that style HAHA. Being a young, broke guy I normally can't even afford to look at one. I agree with you that 40's are timeless when done right and this could be my chance.

Seems to me that if you happen across a 40 Ford coupe you keep quiet about it until you get it in your garage.

I've not priced 40's as I have no idea where one is sitting and the rest are out of my price range but it's going to be worth a good bit more than a Model A.

Here is where I would start. I'd tell him that you know you can buy a model A in similiar condition for $X dollars and offer him something just above that. If you can buy it for anywhere near what an A in similiar condition goes for you'll be in good shape.

Even if you can't afford it at that price, buy it. You'll easily be able to turn it.

40's always bring more than you think. Search the cl***ifieds here on the HAMB as well as other places (completed auctions, etc) to see what stuff actually sells for.

How's the trunk lid? That's the most expensive and tough to find part on a coupe, and there are no repros or patches made.

If the car has the normal 4" of rust around the bottom end, but not rusty driprails, I'd say it's a $2,000 car easily. Could go upwards from there. Just depends on how complete and where the rust is.

i bought a 41 ford couple for $100 about 5 years ago. your if your buy the car you will possible have to put around $15000 in it just to make it nice and in might bring $25000 so you don't want to pay to much for it .

Damn...I'm kickin' myself now! That's the one. I'm embar***ed to even admit to what he offered me the car for 2 weeks ago. Let's just say hes laughin right now at the $$$ he is getting for it. Oh well... there goes my chance at a 40!

  16. $3,850 with 10 hours to go. Looks pretty complete.

Lots of people like to bid on Ebay as a hobby. That car will probably be sitting right there the next time you drive past that barn, then maybe you can snap it up for cheap if the Ebay bidder flakes out like they do a lot of the time.

Look at Vern Hammond's chopped 40 and you'll find a love for them you never knew you had. At least I did.

  17. How much could you have gotten it for 2 weeks ago? Come on, you can tell everyone. I let so much **** slip through my fingers in my life, I'm embar***ed just thinking about it even now.

Damn, that's a nice car, a real survivor, AND in Pa! Yep, you messed up, now you have a lifetime of kicking yourself ahead of you, but a valuable lesson learned.

I just took a look at the Ebay auction. I'm betting he gets somewhere around $7,000 by auction end. I put it in my ebay to watch just for giggles.
SO.....WHAT DID HE OFFER IT TO YOU FOR?

he was askin' $1400, but i felt pretty confident he would have taken $1000 cash... my one buddy was with me and talked me out of it  maybe he really isn't my buddy!!! haha the reason why i even started the post was i was going to buy it today after thinking about the last couple of days. not gonna lie, i'm sick to my stomach right now! i will say that the pictures make the car look better than what it really is IMO.

You need to kick your buddy's ***. Pics always make the car look better than it really is. you'll get over it though. We've all let one (or more) slip through our fingers.

edit: I just checked the auction. Yes, you should have drug it home as soon as he made the offer.

Hey Trav, did you happen to notice if there was a 54 ford fordor there with no front fenders. I am going to look at one out that way this week. I was just wondering if it was the same guy.

7 hours to go. anybody with a lick of sense doesn't bid til the last minute. I bet it goes $7500.00 or more. cheap 40 coupes are hard to find.

    $1400.00!!! unbelieveable.

Don't beat yourself up too badly. Everybody in the old car game has a story about the one that got away.
