Will an 57 three speed bell housing and fly wheel work to put a 4 speed to a 60 389? I have seached the site a little and have seen that The 58-60 bell housing will work. But I just found one off of a 57 347 for a good price and don't want to buy it if it will not work. Thank you in advance for your help I am new here and rely love all the info found on this site.
OK so i did some more searching and found that it will not bolt right up. But has any one tryed boring the center hole out to the 4.625 and relocating the trans bolts? I found a thread where some one had done this. Just wanted to see if any one had any in put.
I don't know for sure, but would the 57 trans be a selector type? If so, I'd be wondering about the input shaft length. on the OLDS selector trans, the olds input is longer than a chev 4 speed (muncie, borg etc), so a 4 speed won't reach the engine pilot bushing.. But I think some GM selectors had a shorter input, so there is a least some chance that your 4 speed input will reach the engine with that 57 bell. Anyways, BTTT for an expert on these
57-60,,,61-64 ,,,65 up Ansen ****ter Shield fit 55-60 so the pattern should be the same but the hole is lager
Should bolt right onto your block, but you'd have to modify it to take any later trans - and you need the later trans with the 389, the 55-57 boxes have a rep as being weak even with the smaller motors. I don't know why it couldn't be modified if you had a comptent machine shop, hog out the bearing retainer hole to the later size, but you may need to make an adapter plate because I don't think there's enough room on the flat face of it for all the bolts for the later trans pattern.
Check out py forum on line for info on this. There is an issue on starter and fly wheel 10 1/2" or 11' if not 59-60. 58 gmc bell will fit 59-60 389. Gets a little messy.
