I know yer not even thinking of me. The KEY WORDS "if I was able" I just walked into a pile of medical bills. Free or not it wouldn't be done for a long ass time. There are way more deserving people on here anyway.

I wouldn't mind making it into a cruizer...couldn't see a 4 door gasser though. I have an extra engine and tranny that would bolt right up too. Is there any interior, especially the seats?

I'm a 15 year old old hamber. I love gasser's. I would relly like to build one. I saw one at the road rockets rumble in indy this year. I like all classic rods. I would love to build a fuel tank flats car someday like I have read about in Hop Up. I am currently working on a '29 model A truck. My Dad has a '56 Chevy and has some extra parts leftover. You can see both of our car's at www.picturetrail.com.dads56 . I already know a little bit bout '56 chevy's. I would ask Steve Case for idea's and some help. Steve has a very good tri-five parts company here in Indiana and knows everything about chevy's. His company is called Case's Chevy Parts. I would want to finish my truck before I started your car though. It will be my daily driver. I'm not sure how I would get the money for parts. I am a pretty good welder. My grandfather has helped me with my truck. I think he would help me with a gasser. He use to own a spreedshop in the 60's and I have heard him tell storys about drag cars he built. He still is an oval track racer in the midwest. I am not sure I could go to the HAMB drags. I would love to go but arn't they only in California? I would have to talk my dad into going with me. I want to take my A to viva las vegas someday.
If the car is still availabe let me know. I would have talk to some people to get permission. Do you think it could also be used as a daily driver?

  9. I've got a kid in his early twenties that hangs out at the shop. He's lookin for a Drag car. How far from OKC to ATL? (Too far) oh well.

    How do I determine worthy?

    That's a hard one.......
You should be a young hamber....probably 25 or under.
You should NOT have 4-5 other projects ahead of this one.
You should be fairly close to OK, within a days drive, maybe?
You should have the DESIRE to see this project through.

This is just something I thought might help a young guy that is interested in vintage drag racing get started.
It's not the lightest car made, but the weight distribution and the room for a cage is good. It is a complete car but not something that is really desireable for the street since so many of the good parts (speedo, speaker grill, seats etc. )are missing. It would be GREAT for a gasser with a straight axle under it. I actually thought about doing it myself but I don't need another project.

If this venture fails , I'll just part it out and go from there.

I'm 18, 1 other car(all thats left is a paint job and maybe a lowering), 8 hours away, the car i've wanted since i was a (younger) kid is a 56 and I don't really care in what form, and my parents will probably shoot me if i take it. All the ingrediants for a worthy young hamber. If I did this though, I'd definately require some guidance.

    OK boys, here's the skinny.

The young gun that stepped up to take this challenge is definately a newbie. The challenge was accepted by Mrs. Root.

She has decided she wants to try her hand at totally building the wagon for her grocery getter by herself (with guidance). I was shocked when she stepped up and started asking what the requirements for the challenge were. She humm hoed around and finally asked if she could have it.

I will post progress pics as we go. Wish her luck!

  14. Congrats. If only my wife would take an interest. Well, maybe it's better that she doesn't. [IMG]

I think she has decided a tow car might be more appropriate for her tastes.

It is gonna be a while.........this car is stripped.

Wish I could qualify for his project, Root. It's no problem carving a couple hundred pounds out of a two-door sedan, The wagon would probably give up at least 300 pounds, particularly if the cutter had access to a small plasma-cutter.

There is a sweet and wonderful history of kick-ass station wagons in the stock and super-stock ranks of old-time NHRA because they had lots of metal in essential places that made for favorable traction.

They've also done well in quicker classes, suitably gutted of unneccessary metal and with lightweight Lexan in place of heavy glass.

It's not a puzzle to figure out a chassis for a car like this. I'd get on the horn -- or internet -- with someone like Chris Alston or Art Morrison to order up an affordable cage kit and some suspension ideas.

IMHO, I think that it's more important to build a chassis -- a racecar -- that has far more cabability than the horsepower you can afford at the beginning. That way, you have a racecar that will last you for a long time, as you can afford to run quicker and quicker.

But that's just the opinion of an old guy who learned the message upside down . . .

While this would've made an awesome gasser project (I'm thinking set back engine with the front doors for engine access, 396, four-speed, slicks, tube axle) it'll be awesome to see it back on the street. Tell Mrs. Roothawgordie good luck for me! I'm jealous. 8^D

Hey, it could be called the "Gimme' Gasser!" and everything on it would be donated, all the HAMBers throw in some parts, and in a while, out comes a complete, badass car.

    [/ QUOTE ]

yeah ,that sounds like some other project from not too long ago. except, the plans for the original promised a free ride to all the people of the HAMB who never had the opourtunity to experience such a vehicle, people donated their goods, but soon later, after the"lawyers" jumped in and said nobody could ride?! [IMG]

    [/ QUOTE ]

You know Butt Reynolds, every time someone makes a smart ass comment about parts being "DONATED" to our car... I get a little offended. Mainly because the people who did help out with parts are people I consider friends... I'd really like to set the record straight, but for some reason I think the computer jockies that forget that I had good intentions in the beginning just piss and whine like a bunch of third graders... they recount the story, each time making it sound more and more like a federal fucking crime... I didn't see anyone else offering to build something for others to enjoy... and I didn't see YOU offering up anything for people to enjoy either.

FWIW, here's a list of the "free" parts I got from friends of mine:
    1. Shag, whom I've enjoyed hanging out with at car shows, enjoyed discussing the finer points of drag racing with and enjoyed traveling to Bonneville with in 2002 gave us a steering box.

Darryl Spurlock who is a fellow Danville Dukes member and HAMB'er has drag racing roots from here in the Bay Area gave us the pickup bed off his old drag racing RPU, a bed that his dad built for him years ago. Darryl also gave us the front tube axle for the car.

Otto, with good intentions gave us some rear rims for the project, but because we didn't want fucking dickheads saying "people donated their goods" we decided not to use them and bought another pair... so when I see him in Turlock in January I'm going to give him his wheels back.

So, there you have it... two of my friends happen to give me parts for our car and you have to shoot of at the fucking pie hole and slander our group and what we did... I used to think you were an alright guy... but now I have to wonder... [IMG]

And as far as any "LAWYERS" stepping in... NOBODY ever said anything about lawyers... What I did get was three e-mails from people saying that even if the car did run 12's it would be too much for guys who are used to driving their 18 second sleds to handle... and because of the liability involved, it "probably wouldn't be a good idea". Ryan had similar concerns when him and I were working out the details for one of the best HAMB meets to date (my opinion), saying "Building a car that everyone can drive? I don't know man."

So anyway, I hope this clears up some of the misconceptions people have about what we built... our group has over 500 hours in the thing and people act like it was thrown together in a weekend...
    Sam.

  27. Didn't mean to hijack your post Roothawg... I think what you're doing is cool.

Have you thought about going to the local shop teachers to see if there are any local gear heads you could pass the torch too?

Sam it's all good. You got nothing to explain as we went round and round over all this before. And it's not like anyone who sent you parts ever bitched right. No blood, no foul..

So let the work on the Mrs RootHawg's Fly-Hauler begin!!!

Zeke, you still interested? I think the car needs to be a gasser. She may have jumpd a little prematurely. After sleeping on the thought of a total frame up ...she kinda thinks maybe she should find one a little less demanding...

So the quest is still on!!!
