i ran across a book i've had quite a while. It's complete book of engine swapping by Leroi Tex Smith volume #2.I'm suprised of the amout of mods you can do to a ford straight six on a budget.A couple interesting points to me was dropping the 300 crank which is forged into the 240,it says you can use chevy pistons, also says corvette valve are the same length and can be used says to use screw in rocker arm studs from the 289.Any way i think it would make a nice engine for a little roadster especialy if you could afford the manifolds and weber carbs for one.
Thanks for the post, I think some of the more odd engines that you don't see in rods would be cool if given a chance.--TV
Even a stock 300-6 is a torque monster. I think the castings got a little sloppy toward the end of the series, but the early motors are just phenomenal. There was T-bucket in some various event coverage that ran a 300. The guy supposedly built it to show his wife how cars worked.
That guy is sooo knowledgeable... I met him when I worked at Carl Brunson's shop... he's amazing. And you Aussies are lucky cuz I think he's moving Down Under!
Sure, you can do all kinds of good stuff to the 240/300 series. There are some guys in the midwest that are taking 12 pounds off of 240 cranks and spinning them up to 7K. They must know what they're doing because they have stayed together for 3 seasons. If you swap the 300 crank, you also need the 300 rods and vibration damper. If you want to use the 240 rods, you need 351 pistons or 390 pistons (.060 bore) or some others I forget. Have fun.
Tex Smith is moving to Oz?? This is a great loss for this country. Tex has a great mind and isn't afraid to use it. The XR-6 and the dollar a pound roadster were milestole cars for their time. I know it's not like he's leaving the planet, but like Gene Winfield, he's one of those guys I'm used to seeing at the swaps. Not so often now, I guess.
Really? Hmmmm Last summer Tex, Bob K and I were standing on the 2nd story balcony at the Wendover Motel 6. we were sipping cold ones and flicking Ron Ceridono **** because he was stuck in the pool...had a m***ive charlie horse in his calf and couldn't get outa the pool.... Later that evening, a bunch of us were all sitting around poolside and Larry O'Toole [Graffiti publishing] and Tex were bs-ing each other but I had no idear.....wonder if they were hatching a plot right then? Nah! probably not. It was fun to hang with some of the icons of the rodding/racing/magazine world. Tex is a real down-to-earth guy and a pleasure to shoot the **** with. Loves to get his hands dirty like most of us. Hope this is just a rumor.
Tex has married an aussie girl, and he has been spending the year ch***ing the summers, ( summer here down under and there in the states too). I have close connection to him, but hadnt heard that he was moving here? I know that the plan was to move to the states to live. Tex says he likes it here, but his family is there, which is understandable. I enjoy having him around as he is always a source of entertainment and enlightenment too. as for the six thing, we looooove our inline six's here, I you want to see a beast of an inline six, look up ford australias website. In the lates falcon there is an XR6 model with a turbo version of the revamed 6 it pumps out about 300 horses ( 240 kilowatts) , its a V8 killer, and has won many people over. there has been alot of work in the after market industry to get these motors working, so they can now give 300 kilowats ( 400 horses) not bad for a 260 cube motor.
From what I understand, she's having trouble getting the US okay to move here... so in that case, he'll move there.

[/ QUOTE ] Yep, good ol' LeRoi seems to be spending a fair bit of time down under. Last time I spoke to him, I think he was splitting his time about 50-50, so you haven't lost him completely.
