A radiator shop can easily fix that. It's a fairly common repair they do

A good welder might be able to repair the intake, but welding alum is definitely not easy and takes skill and the right equip. The fan can be straightened probably. The radiator fixable. It's a mess but it could have been worse I guess. Hang in there.

Rule #1 about mechanical fans of stock steel riveted construction:
If bent or tweaked the slightest bit, find a new one.
If bent all to **** and one blade of 4 is MISSING like this one, discard and find a new one.

    Man that really ****s.
By looking at your photos id bet the fan blade came off first then the vibration busted the intake. Id have the rad fixed and weld up the intake.
I think I have one of them fans but im kinda far away from you and its old and crusty. Quite often there are nos fans on eBay. I just got one for my 35.

When everything went boom Did you find the missing blade?
I don't think I would trust a welded up manifold with all that weight on the front. Invest in a new manifold and may make up a brace for the rear of the alt.

Ya I found the blade and it was in three peices under the car. I am looking into a new intake right now and I am thinking of an electric fan to sve on weight.

Ouch!!!! That ****s. Good idea buying a new manifold, you never know what the old ones went through. How long have you been running this setup for? Hope you get her up, and running soon. Good luck.

Just a suggestion. Flex-a-lite makes a nice black plastic 5 blade fan that has the hole in the middle big enough to fit on the fan stub, after you knock off the old fan. I have one on my 49 Business coupe and it does let it run much cooler and is pretty cheap. Kinda looks like it should be there also, it is a very flat black color.

I agree with the feeling that the blade went first, but having the fan ***embly cantilevered out from the manifold means that the belt tension can't be too tight. Can't really tell in the pics... how much, if at all, did you modify the fan unit to work on your engine??? Was it spaced out further than it would've been on a stock gen mount??

I don't like the look of electric fans and I'm planning on using a stock 8BA fan on my roadster project, but I'm using a stock gen on a home made (modified) cast intake.

If you repair the intake, I'd consider going with an electric fan....

    Good luck.

  21. i think that the intake broke first. the break looks new , except for a couple dark areas...i bet it had an existing crack . then the blade broke when it hit something

Flex a lite makes a racing fan. It has 4 rivets per blade. It is designed to go to 8000 rpm, which of course is more than your flatty will ever turn. It'll stay together.

I agree totally with Rich. Using an alternator makes you have to tighten the belt more than the setup was designed for. I don't like the look of an electric fan either but since you are running an alternator already it doesn't look period under there anyway and it would take a lot of strain off of the mount.

I agree. There is also evidence indicating a strike at the rivets of the fan blade. I also don't think losing a fan blade would cause the whole ***embly to fail with the sudden bang described.

Dollars to donuts the fan blade broke first. Used fans need to be inspected VERY carefully before putting back into service. A fan can throw a blade at any time when the engine is running. It will violently shake the **** out of everything and quickly break the weakest part(s). But it will all happen so quickly it just goes bang! I've seen more than a few broken fan blades in my day result in the kind of damage shown in the OP. It can slice through two layers of sheetmetal and your skull like **** through a goose. NEVER stand inline with a spinning fan!
