Projects 51 GMC New Project with pic's - and a few questions

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Mike in Tulsa, Sep 7, 2009.

  1. Well, I've been looking for a truck project for a while now. I've seen a lot of trucks and I have to say most of them were pretty rough. I came across this one while out riding the Harley Sunday. It's a pretty solid old truck. Needs floor boards and possibly one cab corner. The fenders are pretty beat up but solid. There is an extra GMC 6 in the bed. It comes with 2 extra doors and new chrome running boards. Needless to say I left there a little lighter in the wallet. I'm going to pick it up this week.

I have searched for the differences between the Chevy and GMC and have a pretty good handle on it but some of the questions I still have are... Will Chevy front fenders fit with the GMC grill? I have access to some Chevy fenders. I intended to run a 235 that I have with a 200 4r trans. I already have the trans adapter from Langdon's. Can I use the adapter on the GMC 6? What's the best way to paint the chrome running boards?

I thought about just getting it running and driving it as is but I'm not sure I can let myself do it. I like to paint stuff. I'd like to do a mild kustom. Any input is appreciated.

I'm pretty sure the fenders are the same, just the grill and hood are different. The GMC also has the parking lights on the fender and the Chevy has them in the grille. I have a GMC fender and it appears the same as the Chevy except for the parking light hole but I haven't tried to bolt it up yet on the Chevy. Good looking truck you have.

I finished up a '49 GMC rather recently. Feel free to pm me with any question you might have. I'd be happy to share my many screw-ups with you.

  5. Thanks L. When the time comes I may try the Chevy fenders if I can't find the GMC or if I can't fix the ones on the truck.

Vik, thanks for the offer. I'm sure you'll be hearing from me.

???chrome running boards, and why you need to paint them?

BTW, hit enter after each pic so we dont have to try reading it sideways.

From what I can tell the Fenders are different. I have 2 Advance Design Chevys and 1 GMC. I think that the part of the fenders that the grill mounts to is different.
The GMC six is larger and quite a bit more powerful than the 235, but both are good if you like a six.... I like my V-8's
