something different turbo 6cyl. whaddya think?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Revhead, Oct 22, 2004.

  1. Hey Bass, good point, however, by that logic shouldn't every car out there that makes less horsepower than a small block chevy be replaced with one because they're the cheapest, most reliable way to make power? I vote for the turbo, heck it seems like there's enough HAMBers interested in helping out to make a worthwhile go at it. You can always unbolt the thing.

Hell the turbo idea is the way to go because not many have done it. That is why I wanted to do it to my 235. But with the cracked block that idea is out the window. And the original reason I was building the engine in the 57 was going to be to make a twin turbo 355. But then the engine in the 57 died and I needed something quick. So I just bought parts and put it together as a normal 355.
Intercooling is a MUCH better way to go if you can. That air gets HOT from the turbo. A BOV is a good way to go as well. Use the one you had, off the Talon/Eclipse. Its cheap and holds over 25lbs of boost before it even starts to think about leaking.
Depending on the turbo you are defenatly going to need to plumb water and oil for it. Shouldn't be a problem though.(well I say that, but I know nothing about flattys.)

Please take pictures and record dimensions and part numbers for those of us also dreaming about doing this to our HA engines! [IMG]

sounds like a cool idea. if it was me i'd turbo the six
use that car as a test pod for the motor. get it all lined out. then pull it out put it in a set of rails.
maybe a modified or a roadster body.
then drop a v8 in the car and rig up a hitch.
drag the turbo car to the drags or the salt and run the shit out of it.
    thats what i think [IMG]

This is the website for Salt2Salt, the guys who built a turbo'd flathead six stude, took it to Bonneville, and got a record. Lots of info on the engine build:

I think the real question is, do you want to drive your shoebox further than around the block anytime in the next couple of years? How much down-time is there going to be while you figure out how to mount the turbos, set them up, work out the bugs, etc.?

And to add insult to injury, a strong 327 or 350 will still run circles around it...that's a fact. Take that how you want...I'm really not trying to rain on your parade here since it IS an interesting idea. I'm just trying to help paint the big picture.

    Carry on.

Hmmm, best not do anything different or unusual huh? Best stick with the tried and tested, proven track record stuff and leave all that home engineering to them hot rod hillybillies? [IMG]

Wow, guess I'm a little late to the party. A "friend" of ours abandoned a mid 80's Volkswagon Rabbit Turbo Diesel on our property and I was wondering about the Turbo on this Thing. It's a new Garrett Turbo in the box just sitting there. It's been over a year and a half since the dude left it hear, so I was thinking of taking all the nessecary parts off of it and using it on a '57 F100 with a 6cyl. Would this Turbo work? Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. -Levi G-

  14. The DIY forum on www.theturboforums is very helpful for custom turbo builds.

Custom 88mm in my 98 Formula, 867rwhp dynojet, 9.4@144mph with issues so far. Hoping for 8.7's at some point.

I'm doing a turbo flathead six in my Rambler, I'll be posting a thread about it once it's done and tuned up!

any further turbo updates? Definitely would like to see some work in progress photos.

  17. not true, its all about tuning and at 4 or 5 pounds hes not going to be creating an assload of heat. I built a draw through set up on my Harley and used a Warner-ishi RHB-52. no intercooler and 8#.
My turbo SRT was over 500 hp at 25# with intercooler, so's I know a smidgen about boost and w/ and w/o cooling.
True, intercooler would be best, but as said, hes not building a race car and the car wouldnt be under boost all the time when driving.
Although, when he discovers boost, he will probably have his foot in it constantly, its hard not to.
Point of my reply was to correct the myth your spreading and hopefully convey the fact that boost is safe even on stock unprepped motors if you keep the boost in the 4-6# range and tune it properly and the motor will live long time.
My srt had 33k on the clock when I sold it and that probably 15K of hard high boost and 100 shot of nx top end racing. my wife drove it daily, and I raced it weekends.
