got a 75 400sbc in my 47 dodge and i can't keep starter drives in it. yea i get them from autozone (2), advanceauto, and napa. that is the last one that has lasted the longest, i guess cause it's a "5" roller type. i guess it's time to buy a rebuilt starter. WTF?
or buy a PMGR starter. http://www.batteriesareus.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=408
do you have a starter brace at the rear of the starter up to the side of the block? if not try one of those. might possibly help. also make sure you have the correct drive. is your flywheel a 154 or 168 tooth? there are two different drives for the two. is it bent in any way? look at it while it's turning if there's any wobble in it replace the flywheel . but the best way to solve the problem is to buy a starter with a cast iron nose cone on it for the correct application and install the rear brace guaranteed no more problems as long as the flywheel's good.
flywheel is the same that came with original motor, looked at flywheel when i ***embled it, laided on flat surface, no wobble there. as far 154 tooth or 168 i have no clue, but when replacing them it dosen't look like the teeth are scored or shiny. don't have extra rear brace, where would i find a cast iron nose cone? truck applacation? junk yards around here only seem to have parts cars within last 10-15 yrs. old. using shims when ***embling and turns free. can hear differance when not using them. but starter bolts are weezed, but hold tight. looks to fit squarely in place.
