Hahaha...that kid looks like a scrapper! Great photo. The modified that Von scott posted was a great car, John built it with virtually no money and it is nicely crafted...even though it kinda looks sketchy!

Damn you! I was quite content building a sedan turned truck and you had to lay all of this out! Now I have visions of modifieds dancing in my head. I do have a Mercedes straght six that would look good in a modified, and an A frame and....dammit! I wish I could stick with a plan.

hey kustombuilder, thanks for starting this thread. my site's getting pretty stale, but i'm still collecting modified photos (several hundred, I assure you) for when I eventually get the site redesigned. but there's some in this thread already that I dont think I yet have.

Well as long as you leave mine there - I kinda rely on it cos I'm too lazy to finish my own site!
Reckon all these are used on flatter roads - here's mine...

  12. I see some un-modifieds in this collection of photos. Some T-buckets, some rat-rods and a couple that can't decide if they're modifieds or track roadsters.
I always thought a "modified" was narrowed to cheat the Bonneville wind. Mine will be a single passenger roadster.

This is my favorite, the Dusty Campbell/Danny Sakai modified, circa 1939.

Well if that's the definition of a modified then my favorite has to be Stu Hilborn's back in the day(you know way back before I was born, lol) I want to build a copy of that for my next project [IMG][ QUOTE ]

Why not something different in engine ideas....pontiac ohc 6.....or the pontiac bent 4 from the old tempest...maybe a chrysler slant six or a pontiac quad cam four rotated 90 degrees....or ford svo mustang 4cyl turbo (180 hp)...subaru wrx would be a handful!!...and some cool pipes and carbs would look bitchin.

    Rocky-
I understand what you're getting at. We get our contemporary definition of "modified" from the classes in which these cars ran in the 40s (up through '49, I believe, but check the site for the exact year), and MOST but not ALL of the cars that ran in those classes were indeed narrowed. Since the SCTA started the streamliner class, effectively making the modifieds obsolete, it seems more rodders wanted that extra seat rather than to cheat the wind, so hardly anybody narrowed their roadster after that. The definition has loosened with use.

Strangely, though we still see some rather unusual parts combos in modifieds, they by and large follow the same all-Ford spec sheet that the rest of the traditional hot rods follow nowadays. If you look at the photos and descriptions of modifieds from when they raced, you'd see much more variety than nowadays. So the definition has narrowed with use as well.

Another look I am toying with. If I can come up with a way to make the door lines and cowl lines come together with the cowl about 3 inches lower. I want to try peaking the cowl to match the bottom of the windshield frame Still all in mockup/design stage. Lots of lowering and channeling to do yet either way. I am working this 4 door cowl because it has become evident that I will have to whack some off the bottom of the cowl at some point to get the front and back to run together and I really don't want to hack off the roadster cowl posts just yet.

Kinda fugly from this angle. Obviously the cowl needs dropped and trimmed off and the windshield frame needs to loose a few inches.

I wouldn't get too quick to channel it very much. You have to try it on for size. I can pretty much sit down and be inside mine. Too much lowering and you may be sitting too high. Just my opinion but there are some Tbuckets around here that look cool parked on the grass. But when a driver get's in it look's silly, like riding a garden tractor, but that's just my conservative opinion.
I got about $1300 in mine so far, Radiator core, alternator, window, and final details will put me close to 2 grand finished price. [image]http://www.directimagehost.com/is.php?i=38687&img=Dsc01887.jpg[/image]
