[ QUOTE ] When I was in the Navy, skating meant you were somehow smart enough to get out of work and get away with it. Those gringo guys look like Cat IV's. Ask your local recruiter what that means. [/ QUOTE ] Pigpen, step into the future a bit and you'll realize that skateboarding means "alot more" in the modern day to people all over the world than back in the day I just got back from Guantanamo bay, Cuba ( U.S. Navel base) a week ago, check link for a short story: http://www.motonews.com/mototalk2/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=motomain&Number=255487&page=2&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&fpart= where i was sent by one of my Skateboarding business sponsors ( Vans Shoes), to do a skateboard demonstration for the kids and parents of the navy people stationed there for an "appreciation day" event set up by the military and it was a huge success! They gave us a warm welcome ( except for a few drunk Jarhead/jocks that wanted to fight one of us just to show how tough they were and why they are trained to be there) other than that... they were so pleased with our show that they want us back next year! some of the soldeirs were totally bummed because they had to work that day, but we ended up signing posters for some of them because they were on active duty that day. skateboarding has brought me all over the world and i have experienced many different cultures first-hand that most just read about in books and magazines This was a first for me doing something for the military and i'm glad i didn't have to join the Navy or say the least, or be recruited to visit a Navy base in Cuba for a few days stay Things have changed over the years since you were a kid and skateboarding has brought alot of good memories and smiles to many kids and parents all over the world! just ask this forum and you'll know that it's been a creative outlet for most people in this world that were able to expand their minds a bit and not become just another "sheep in this world" with no direction in their life as a teenager after highschool. Skateboarders are like artists, that have creative minds of their own, are not afraid of challenges and learn to become dedicated, loyal, patient and most of all... learn to have focus, control and have confidence in oneself It may still be looked at as a "toy for kids" for some, but i have experienced more out of life that i could have ever dreamed of. I have met so many awesome people within our sport/industry that i wouldn't give it up for anything else in this world. I'm proud to be a skateboarder and i'm proud that it has become my hobby/career/job/lifestyle and it's kept me feeling young my whole life... it's "the fountain of youth" that many have yet and will never get the opportunity to discover in their lifetime. keeping an open-mind reveals new discoveries yet to be explored! CAB
[ QUOTE ] Pigpen, Playing with cars ( for grown-ups) are for little boys as well...is there a difference? ...by the way, i'm proud to be a 40 year old kid CAB [/ QUOTE ] Cab is right,I got my first board in 1977! Damn skinny little knee grinder that I had to hide from my dad. THAT is the first thing that made me want tools, had to work on it you know! Still have some around, still watch it on TV. (damn! you see that!) Love this place, glad I found it,Ryan can do and say whatever he wants in my book. Its his board. Just like Cab said, glad to still be a 40 year old kid!
I'm a Navy Vet AND a life-long skateboarder....I'm also a good Catholic boy AND love schoolgirls wrestling in plaid skirts.....I fully try to support this board YET Ryan doesn't love me..... It's possible to do both if that's what you want to do. Cab has been a positive influence on youth for years....it's those damn Alva team guys that made kids do bad things!
[ QUOTE ] Hey Zman. I checked out your gringoscateboard link. I find the "Team Photos" very interesting. Heath Cheryhomes fits my mental image of a skateboarder to a the nth degree. Reminds me of my grandson when he makes a funny face. I rest my case. pigpen When I was in the Navy, skating meant you were somehow smart enough to get out of work and get away with it. Those gringo guys look like Cat IV's. Ask your local recruiter what that means. [/ QUOTE ] See you just don't get, and after this reply I think you never will. I don't think you have the mental cpacity to get it. Maybe those guys that got out of work were smarter than you. It seems you can't grasp the concept. Of course you know what they say about guys in the navy. So let's see how much more of an ass you can make of yourself... Johnny; you're right about the Alva guys. I should have never let John T.flow me those boards. It's probably why I am the way I am..
[/ QUOTE ] Pigpen, step into the future a bit and you'll realize that skateboarding means "alot more" in the modern day to people all over the world than back in the day CAB [/ QUOTE ] You just maid his point for him. Pigpen didn't need to insult boarding and he wasn't real polite in the way he said it, but he's right. Scateboarding has nothing to do with "Traditional Rods n Kustoms" You backed that up by telling him to "step into the future". I'm impressed as hell with your boarding, but it doesn't have anything to do with traditional rods n kustoms. I think these new rules are great. This should save Ryan a shitload of bandwidth. Craig
If anyone has a vintage Haro or GT for auction, I'll bid! Ol' skool freestylers know what I'm talkin' about..... Like I used to tell my skateboarding buds- Skates not dead, but its close enuff! What is up for auction is there to help the board & Ryan. It doesn't need to be "traditional". It just needs to make a little cash. Now discussions on where to find a good set of trucks for your board would be OT.....
Coupe De Cab: Very, very, well said. Yes, drunk jarheads are truly a pain in the back side. I also learned back in the day to never, never, ever, drink with Aussies. I can respect the sport of skateboarding, but I don't like the little local pukes who trash the parking lots and create a nusance. Much like the early street racers (I'm also guilty of that), they need a "strip". The local powers that be are not interested. Bad for business actually. I'm still of the opinion that skateboarding doesn't belong on a hotrod message board but as they say; opinions are like assholes; everybody has one and they all stink. I predict that you will go far and good luck with the rod that you bought. Zman seems very angry, don't you think? Regards, pigpen Have you ever seen Tonja Harding's home brewed wedding night video? She's a good skater too! All hail Tonja; all hail Tonja..............
I'm not angry, but your attitude does seem a little annoying. By the way there are a lot of people who developed a "do it yourself" during their days skateboarding, this carried over for them getting into cars and doing it themselves. Like I said you just won't get it, stop trying...
I am impressed with what these skaters can do and that from somebody that grew up in a place with only dirt roads and the only sidewalk was about 40 feet in front of the post office. the only thing we got into was Dirt Bikes there was many times I almost killed myself there a time or two. the Auction is cool CAB it is way above my cash flow right now but I am sure everything will go to a place where it will be appreciated.
[ QUOTE ] I'm still of the opinion that skateboarding doesn't belong on a hotrod message board [/ QUOTE ] I would say damn near ANYTHING that helps bring in $225 (so far), to help pay for bandwith on the HAMB, belongs here...at least in the auction category. If you have a pair of Harding's skates, feel free to donate them for a HAMB auction of your own.
[ QUOTE ] I'm still of the opinion that skateboarding doesn't belong on a hotrod message board [/ QUOTE ] I'm beginning to think you don't. I don't run a fair world here. I honestly and willingly admit to a double standard. You aren't been held here by gunpoint...
Ryan, I like it! It should give anyone new an idea what we expect and why we come together here. Sorry guys, I don't agree with Pigpen about the skateboard auction. I think anything that brings money to help here should be accepted. Pigpen, I do agree with you and others in the opinion that hotrods and skateboarding do not relate to one another. Not that it's not cool. Just not as cool as traditional hotrodding.
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] They gave us a warm welcome ( except for a few drunk Jarhead/jocks that wanted to fight one of us just to show how tough they were and why they are trained to be there) [/ QUOTE ] I am a former Marine/Jarhead, it seems to always be a select few to ruin a total good thing for everyone. I am glad that despite the abrasive acts of few, that everyone was still able to enjoy themselves. Jonney
There should be a few questions in the middle of the registration process to see who actually read the rules. If they don't get the questions right, they start over or don't get it. JP
Yes, I'm sure you're right. I probably don't belong on the H.A.M.B and I should do a JimA. I would be in the same company as an editor for R&C mag. What a loss of resources that was. On the other hand, the first thing I noticed on the H.A.M.B. this morning is that a few of the troops liked my tech post on the flathead fan switch. That, and the fact that I can't resist a double standard tells me that I should stay around awhile. Thick skin don't you know. Regards, pigpen "Tell us to stay around awhile". (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid)
If you tell a group of people the sky is blue, you are garunteed to have one person ready to kill you cause they think it's "AQUA!" Rashy's right! Keep up the good work! My LAWNCHAIR RULEZZZ over yours!!!
Ryan, I support the idea of rules & guidlines. My suggestion is that the rules and guidlines is a sort of a pop up or mandatory "read through", at registration. Guess my suggestion is nothing new and the new H.A.M.B. sign up is already introduced..... / Sven
I didn't read the rest of the posts so don't bitch at me, but why not have it regulated by referal only? Like take the HAMBERS online right now, and any newbie who wants to sign up to the HAMB MUST BE reffered by another hamber. The Hamber who reffered the newbie is also responsible for stupid posts from the newb. I think it would work
I know alot of "clubs" work that way. Unfortunately, that would mean some poor slob in the middle of nowhere couldn't join, because he doesn't know anyone cool enough to already be a member. Only people with cool friends would be able to join. Not very democratic.
