decide what you want and go from there. If you like the looks of the early 6 there are lots of options. My 235 ran fine this weekend at 75 on the highway for 250 miles. and it will bolt to your orig trans and rear for now. if you want to swap the trans and rear later on you can. If you want more HP, you can find a 261 or a 270.302 GMC and still keep the orig driveline until you decide to modify the driveline. Nuttin wrong with a 235
I like 6inarow. Anyone from SD is good people in my book. I believe that this is the second time you have told me that!! HAHA I should have listened the first time! I think that I am sold on the 6, I just need to get rid of this 216....anyone?
I am one of the guys that build.. ...and my inspiration is to take everything out of my pockets and walk out to the s**** pile and ask myself what could I build with no money that would blow peoples minds. I've seen some really effed up poop on rodent rods, enough to make me never want one simply by toiletry ***ociation. I've been offended as hell as some visitor walks up while I'm working on a 1/4 M$ car that is still in bare metal and ask me if it's a rodent rod. I have also worked on H.A.M.B. cars (yes, it was yours), that every part on the car looked like it needed just a little more sanding, or blasting, or painting before I would have bolted it back on myself. But I forgave you (yes, it was you), because your stuff was the real deal. So new guy, you are learning by abuse and torture what is cool, what was cool and what will be cool when you too are old and had it up to here with the latest rodent kulture trend screwing up years of American hot rodding discipline. I hope to someday gaze upon your workmanship and wish I had the skill to do what you have done. This is the honor and glory of what we do.
.....inspiration and determination....patience is what is going to kill me...well, smoking, drinking and driving fast might too.
I always get a kick out of the "ran fine when pulled" descriptions. If it ran so well, why did they pull it???
That, and if it's a more door pull it out and part out the car, to save for a proper 2-door project. More door cars make perfect parts cars.
I say that about 2 door Hardtops when looking for Convertible parts.. That does not pertain to my Tbird
you gotta hit up the swap meets man! Sate Fe Springs ALWAYS has 4 for 10 and if you catch someone going out of business, 5 for $10. My kids wear them also! A little far for you to drive to save a couple bucks though. I will trade you the 4 for $10 for HoDaddy's any day!
Man, when I first read this I thought you were just trying to stir up more contraversy. Then I saw your responses that were pretty cool, and then you started getting some solid advice. With that being said, I wish that the FNG's would spend some time browsing this site before they start posting. I think I lurked on here for about 2 months before I started posting questions, just to make sure the site was right for me and that I (and my car) was right for the site.....
What you are wanting to build is a "driver". You'll never catch flak over that. That said, find a 250. Great gas mileage and will run and run. Especially with the 3 speed.
Do a search for "250 50 chevy". There are a few threads on how people have done it. It's not a simple swap like a 235 would be. Not all that complicated though. A 305-350 isn't a simple swap either.
I'm no expert, but I believe that with the 250-292 CID inline sixes the Engine will not bolt on to the 216-235 CID transmissions. So you may need a newer ******, but like I said I'm no expert.
Papabox the crowd was easy on you mainly because you understood the responses to you initial question and chose to rephrase it. 250 chevy is a good swap but you will need newer trans of 55'+ because your stock setup is enclosed driveline. the rearend will need to be changed as well. check out www.chevytalk.com all sorts of info and pic's there. stick to the term beater and you'll do fine. post some pic's of your project.
I was actually on that site today and registered for the forum but I think you have to pay to interact. I guess I could just read as much as possible for free. I think that 8Flitliner6 and 55 dude are on the same path....Let me read up on mods that need to be done with all of the options and see which way I want to go. I have a feeling that, with not wanting to melt tires and doing next to zilch freeway driving, 235 might be the way to go....at least....for now...
Thanks for all the help last night guys....I think my mind is much clearer now...I wouldn't say crystal clear, but clearer.
Ok, I got a 1955 235 with a ****** today from a fellow HAMBer, thanks Dereck, now I have a question. It appears as though the motor mounts and ****** is different. Remember the ***le of this thread, New to motors...I searched for a thread on making new mounts but didn't find anything. Should I do it from scratch and make my own or should I go ahead and by the motors mounts that fit a 55 motor? Also, with the ****** looking different, will I need to change my driveline? This motor is EXACTLY what I was looking for, already converted to 12V, full pressure, new EVERYTHING! Thanks in advance! Everybody steered me in the right direction! I have already bout a triple carb, dual exhaust manifold for it!
