Just heard from a buddy of mine that he scored a 82 mustang 302 and srod ******, 4 spd. and driveshaft. It came out of a 44,000 mile car that was wrecked. He wants to trade it to me from some body parts I have. Would this be a decent drivetrain for a light coupe? Not looking for rip roaring speed and torque here, just a reliable driver. Is there a computer on this engine or just smog ****? Thanks.
It's a good combo, you can pull the smog **** off. Those little 302's will take a helluva lot of abuse and keep on tickin.
Great little engine and combo for what you are saying your looking for, you will be happy. No computer, just a bunch of smog **** and equipment. Swap meet a nice carb around 600 cfm, dual plane aluminum intake, some headers short or long, and we will see you smile from here. Someday power aint enough anymore, not hard or expensive to make her a 331 or 347, and still have a VERY streetable low budget runner, good luck with your new mill.
perfet combo, the OD trans is good too,, kinda lack lusting in first, so pick a rear gear suitable (3.50-3.70).
Does sound weird for an 82, but ran across a guy with a 57 Chevy at a local show this weekend with only 69k. All original yet. It happens but not very often. Who knows maybe some little ol lady owned it.
I've got a 1956 Chrysler New Yorker with just over 47K original miles. Some cars don't get driven much.......
He did say that it was "wrecked". I recently bought an '85 GT Convertible with 67k miles. It also has it's original top.
Just make sure its a 302 because between 1980 and 82 they made some 255 c i small blocks and they were in some mustangs and that engine is a pos. it kind of looks like a 302 but has several subtle differences , check the tune up decals under the hood they should tell the engine size . also the 8th digit of the serial number is the engine code . i will research the code for both and post it
ok if the 8th digit of the vin is either a D or a C it is a 255 c. i. if it is a code F it is a 302 . the problem with the 255 is nothing will interchange other than maybe valve covers and oil pan even the intake is different.
sounds like the perfect combo to me!! no chevy distributor headaches, a four speed is always fun, those mills put out somwhere around 190hp if im not mistaken depending on whether its the h.o. 302. but it wont be hard to grab a little more out of it with a good carb and intake combo. perfect for a cruiser or d.d.
it's a 302, it has aluminum ribbed valve covers that say powered by ford on them and the number came back as a 302. Looks like I'm going to pick it up. Oh, the car was wrecked some years ago but has been in the garage because the guy didn't know what to do with it. It still runs and drives but is smashed up.
If you have the AOD transmission, the early ones have a lot of issues that need to be addressed before you use it,best to do that while it is out.AOD's if left sitting for an extended period like this has will usually have a problem with the governor sticking and it won't upshift.Installing a Trans-Go Reprograming kit will take care of most of the early AOD weak points,do a real good cleaning of the governor and install the Hi-Rev that comes with the kit.
The S-ROd 4-speed is basically a 3-speed , with the 4th gear being overdrive. They seem to be pretty tough. I abused the snot out of one in an '82 Capri RS with a warmed over 302 and it held up, even in the heavier car. Should make an excellent choice for your application.
Glad to hear someone has actually had a srod, single rail over drive, on here. I have been told both good and bad about it but hell, you can break anything if you try hard enough. It is going in a model a coupe. Planning on a weiand intake/new carb and headers and that's it. Picking up a 66 bronco rear end with a 3.50.1 gear so it should be a nice combo.
This is what it is going in, my plans are to keep it as is for awhile before it gets painted. Going to make the motor look as vintage as I can. Oil bath air cleaner modified to fit the 4 barrel, ford green engine paint, cloth ignition wires and a power gen instead of the alternator.
Yeah, I want it as stock as possible, gonna add 16's for ride comfort but the rest will look like a car that you just can't seem to be able to place what is different with it. Single exhaust is a good idea.
