I read somewhere that most automotive speciality magazines have been bought up and that the parent company is close to bankrupcy, andbefore my first issue showed up they were sending me offers to renew for 2 more years. ?? are they trying to collect the money then split to who knows where.?? most magazines have very little how to's in the back yard shop .. like we did 50 years ago..

I have I don't know how many of issues of that mag, and as stated from someone else....how many times CAN a mag do a tech article on installing a Mustang II. Atleast once an issue as they prove. I quit buying them because they were full of cars that were primarily bought, not built....Built, but not buy owner (which is the same as first example in my opinion)....or full of parts only Donald Trump could afford.....and the parts for sale were way out of my league. As for the comment about no ads/last issue...THINK. How freakin long do you think a magazine will last if it only contains parts no one can afford, and a couple cars with tired tech articles? (A long time apparently, haha) If I wanted a parts catalog, I'll keep my 6.95 and get a free one from Summit. Thats my .02 -I find the cheap rags from real car guys, building real drivers to be far more interesting anyhow.

If you do a search- someone's bitching about every rag out there.
For 18 bux for 2 years- beats the shit out of watching TV.

Some are too "culture", some are ratroddy, some are street roddy, some have too many ads, some are more like coffee table books & too damn expensive.

There's usually something in each issue that's worth less than a buck to me.

I don't know about the parent company but I buy these mag subscriptions with a credit card just in case they fold so I can get my $$ back. This economy probably has more bad stuff to come.

we like the ads and every day guys call us cause they just saw our ad in sr for the 1st time it is a balance, and what about hemmings motor news, they caught hell for putting in articles. that mag was 100% advertsing

  10. ya cant they don't offer one. i was to the circulation doesn't meet the need for that service

  11. umm nowhere ever
they arent going to offer subs to delux because they claim they lose money on subs thats the answer i got from them over on hotrod.com back a few months ago
if you go over to that site the post is prolly still on the front page , because thats how much traffic thier lousy site gets

The situation with advertising is this: it helps keep the publication ALIVE. No ads, and the cover price goes way up.

Am I saying the editorial content can't improve? NO

But to blame it on the advertising, makes zero sense.

  13. We pay $12 a copy for SRM in oz. It,s funny this post came up as I was just looking thru the latest copy & thinking its gone to shit, to many pages wasted on tech articles of no interest to me & the cars featured seem to be just another form of advertising with every part purchased with supplier listed. Now someone will say dont buy it , I wont be its gone the way of hotrod mag. back in the 70-80,s.

I too want to ditch Street Rodder. Would Hot Rod Deluxe be the next in line to get?
I already get the quarterly Rodder's Jounal so don't count that one.

Magazines make their money off of ad space not off of the subscription rate. You might try and email the magazine and ask if they would lower the price of their mag. Suggest they would get a higher subscription rate with a lower price and then they could charge a higher price for their ad space and make more money. If that doesn't work you could try and start your own magazine.:D

I subscribed to SR a year ago at a low low price, I don't mind the ads but the tech articles suck like in the latest - how to bolt together a P&J front end on your frame, yes its gotta be all P&J - and the frame isn't even finished. The tech articles are just ads too so SR is 100% ads ! I won't be renewing.

  17. I look at it like TV, they have ads to keep on the air in spite of how much I pay the cable folks, right? Well, this is not much different and what is wrong with a few ads? I agree that the editorial content and the "tech" articles are a little weak but compared to what? the HAMB? No contest! One read on here is like the library of congress! Right? Right! Therefore how can any of them compete with the vast database of information I ask you. And yes, TRJ is the king with several others on the good end of the read scale.

I love it when you guys start bitching about the current magazines. A lot of you pissed more $$$'s down the urinal last Friday night after cashing your paycheck than a magazine cost and never said a word. You woke up (came to) the next morning feeling a little.....well you know, and started looking forward to next week when you could do it all over again.:D:D:D

After 50+ years in the hot rod industry advertising business, I'm going to reveal a deep dark secret as to what the advertisers and editorial writers really believe! First off, the thinking is that hot rodders are no different than the students in a four year college. every year there's a new crop of freshmen hot rodders that haven't seen the stories on engine swaps that every body else has seen. Seniors move on to specific areas of interest and drop their subs to various general interest hot rod books. In other words, magazine readers ebb and flow as their interests are either sharpened or go away entirely.

I've seen all of these bitches and gripes over the years. Quite frankly, the complainers in the 1960's had a better command of the English language and could spell!

I was talking to a friend the other day and we both commented on the fact that the latest issue of HRM looked like something out of the 1950's as all of the ads were for car stuff and the only exceptions were an ad for Wranglers, two Viagra ads and a pair of ads for charity raffles. For the record, Petersen refused to take ads for Tobacco, beer or hard booze because he thought that his magazines should set an example. It was only after the FTC banned tobacco advertising that he relented.

  21. I think 100 pages of hot rodding stuff is great.
Wish our local mags had that much content.
Think of the 80 pages of ads as an added extra.
    Read then or not.

It's always a good idea to avoid the mags that spec out what the owner 'bought' to build his car. The topic mag is most always one of those. The tech articles ( :D ) are how to buy and install the product too.

The crap(ads) to good ratio(tech, etc) is still the same as its ever been. The mag has only gotten bigger so it just seems worse if you don't stop to think about it.

ask yourself what a magazine is? its an advertising tool. a print media designed for the purpose of targeting a select special interest group with ads relevent to that group. the articles, features and ads are all designed to promote interest in products ideas and services related to the magazines target audience. once you know that all becomes clear!

They don't have subscriptions. Frieburger had posted here on the HAMB that it won't happen anytime soon.
