I'm running a Joe Hunt fake magneto distributor. Pings all the time even with racing gas ,104 octane. Who's in the Boston area, Arlington, Medford, Woburn, Revere, or Lynn that has a distributor machine and can check my centrifical advance and other culprits. I have no vacuum advance naturally and it's just a stock SBC 350, small single feed Holly in a very light roadster with automatic. I'm kinda stumped and I don't want to melt it down of course. I've set the initial timing at 8 degrees and even backed it down to 3 degrees where it gets real soggy and still pings. any suggestions?
I think you need to go the other way. I have a Mallory dual point with no vacuum advance. I've got it set at 14, but it's a 4 speed car. Go as high as you can until it won't start when it's hot. See if that works.
If you can't find anyone in the BeanTown area...send it to GMC Bubba...he is the Dizzy master. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/group.php?do=discuss&group=&discussionid=419
