Richard, First post your state, which has a major effect on what you will need. Next why don't you have a ***le already, which may lead to suggestions on what approach to use? Most states have formal procedures to get a ***le on a vehicle without one (sometimes easy, sometimes hard). Is your car stock or a hot rod? Finally, although a lot of people will recommend the ***le mills I keep expecting to read any day where there was a raid on a ***le mill and all of the cars are being inspected and confi****ed as required (maybe I am paranoid, but that doesn't mean it is not going to happen). Charlie Stephens
I've recently registered a 1940 Ford here in CT...no ***le needed...just a bill of sale and then a VIN VERIFICATION...Went to one of the states APPROVED garages, they did a VIN verification..back to DMV...they handed me plates! SO check you local DMV/BMV for their requirments prior to forking out a couple hundred for those "HISTORICAL DO***ENTS"
If you have a stock frame, the id numbers should be just under the cowl, if I remember right. While it is a pain in the ***, you need to loosen the cowl to show the numbers. Find a ***le service company, they can inspect and verify the numbers and help with the process for filing for a lost pink. In Cali, if you have new rails, you may be screwed. They have tightened up registration and those ***les bought from out of state companies are scrutinized. They only offer 500 specialty built ***les each year, so get in line at the DMV like yesterday. And yes, Charlie Stephens, they have gone the legal route with ***le companies and there are quite a few cars in Cal that may be in limbo.
I have the same issue, as right now I can't find the ***les to the Model A or the truck. Both are stock as far as body and frame go and still have plates on them, I found a registration to the Model A dating to 1977 but I'm not sure what else down here.
