100$ for my first car a 56 ford sedan delivery, also pics in my album after I fixed it up.

50$ for a 49 packard clipper 4 that I fixed up and it got stolen.

  3. I bought my first car in 1957, three years before I had a license. A 1948 Chevy all doors for $17.50. The seller had to drive it to my house for me, then my Dad drove him home.

2004, I bought a '36 Ford Five Window, '54 Mercury Custom, and a '68 El Camino for $100. Thats like $33.50 each. All were rough.

Didn't even move the '36 when my friend saw it, and traded me a running, driving, '54 Ford Mainline.

He then sold the 5-window for about $2000. Bought it back for $500, and sold it for about $1500.

Found this behind a barn in Columbia, Mo. in '54 and paid $15 for it. Sold it a month later to a friend for $20. A pretty impressive 25% profit, I tthought at the time.

1973 Vega wagon, powder blue with white rally stripes and a luggage rack. Set me back a big $50.00. I was only 13 when I bought it so I had to hide it around the corner so my Dad didn't see it.

I once bought a 64 Nova from a friend of mine and the price on the bill of sale read..."One hundred and Seven Dollars and Sixty Nine Cents, and participation in all of our future sandlot football games".

Not traditional, but I bought a '67 VW 21 window bus in 1988 for $100. Knocked on the guy's door once a month for 2 years. One day, he didn't answer, first time ever. 80 year old guy walks over from next door, says he's Frank's dad and Frank shot/killed himself last week. Being the inconsiderate kid I was, I asked if the van was for sale. He said he'd research the value and come back tomorrow. Tomorrow, he asked for $100 :D

I traded a trucker hat and a 30 pack of beer for a 1966 Plymouth Sport Fury III! So if you do the math, about 40 bucks for the car!!!

Early 70's and I'm driving a wrecker part time at night for extra money. Go to start a guy's car one frigid February morning. Strung the jumper cables into his garage and notice a '58 Vette with the right front fender knocked off and laying in pieces on the hood. Started the car and asked about the Vette. Guy says it belongs to his kid who wrecked it before going into the service and it's been sitting there for over 6 years. If I can get it out of the garage it's mine for $400. Came back after work, aired up the tires and had it sitting in his driveway when he got out of work. It had both tops a frozen and cracked 283 4bbl, 4spd. I parted it out for a grand total of $800. Made $400 for about 8 hours work and thought I'd really done good. I'm not nearly that stupid today.......................close but a little wiser.:rolleyes::D

I had to give $225.00 for this one in 1967. Had the guy talked into selling it for $200. but his dad said not a penny less than $225. They had just rebuilt the engine. img020.jpg

I paid $100 for my '40 sedan body eight years ago...
I think I got ripped off.

  17. I was working at a Ford dealership, 1973. Guy pulls up to the service door with a '65 Mustang fastback hammering so loud the whole shop heard it. He comes in & asks the service writer to "check my engine, it's knocking". Mechanic goes out to bring the car in & it locks up tight before he could get it on the hoist. Mech told him the engine blew up, did he want to know more? Guy says no, but wants a price on an engine. Too much, he says, how much is the car worth? Service writer says the scrapyard pays $35 for non-running cars but it'd cost $25 to tow it over there. I told the guy I'd give him $35 right now, he says okay and brings the title back an hour later. I towed the car home, sold the trans for $25, front fenders & hood for $35, buckets for $10, then towed the leftover hull to the scrapyard they gave me ten bucks for it.

...when I was in High School, I always had three or four cars. I would buy and sell.

A cousin gave me a running 1957 Plymouth 2door hdtp. The guy next door loved the car and traded his '54 Ford 2 door wagon and 200.00 for it. I used 100.00 of that money to buy a '58 2 door sedan Ford Custom 300 (6 cyl 3-speed). I then traded the '58 to my barber for 200.00 and a 1939 Chev 2 door sedan. So, when it was all over, I had 300.00 bucks in my pocket AND the 39 Chev. All of that happened within a week back in 1965.

In 1964, 300.00 bucks was a huge amount of money, ...HUGE

I bought my first car in February 1966.

1941 Willys 4 door sedan, clean, rust free, running, registered and fully roadworthy with a mountain of spare parts. I thrashed it around for 18 months, blew up every spare gearbox I owned or could find, then swapped if for a rusty but running and registered 1950 Ford 4 door sedan.

    Cheers, Glen.

1956 Chevy 2dr with battery, gas, and turn key. I drove it home for 50.00.It was in a farmers field. The next morning I decided it was my Daily Driver. I never even changed the oil just added to it once in a while for the next year. (back in the 70's)

In about 1959 or so I bought a original condition 1941 four door Willys Sedan for $25.00. It was pulling a one blade plow when I spotted it. I parked my 39 Ford Sedan to drive the Willys home then when back for the 39. Should have kept both of them......:(

In about 05 I bought a 65 Rivi for $500. It was real clean, nice body/paint and great interior but had been sitting for quite awhile. Once I got it home, all it took was four wheel cylinders, battery, carb rebuild/tune up and it turned out to be a great driver.

In about 77 I was at a buddys house and one of his friends pulled in talking about this 65 Impala plain Jane, dummy lights, factory 4 speed with a bench seat and a tach in the dash and a 12 Bolt Posi for $80. Well I pictured it in the weeds over the roof. Then he said it has a good clutch in it, it will chirp the tires in 3rd gear. Well I had $80 in my pocket and we was of to drive it home with the tags off of my other car. Wish I still had it, It was a sweet car. Sold it for $300 and the guy sold the Muncie for $200. Can I go back??

I remember in the late 80's going to classic car auctions and seeing GTO's (granted not HAMB cars) sell for 10 grand for a MINT one. To me that was all the money in the world. Also seeing Hemi Mopars going in the low to mid teens for beautiful cars.....If I only would have known then and had the money to act on it.

  27. Back in 2004 I purchased a 1939 Mercury Tudor for $250 and drug it home. After having my ass handed to me for being a FNG and not doing an intro, I parted the bigger pieces out to a few HAMBers, the dash to a custom shop in TX, the running gear locally and used the profits to fund the first Pontiac project.

Bought my real, matching numbers 70 HemiCuda 4 speed export built for about 7.000.000 lires ( about 3500$) in 87, with 6000 miles on her. Engine was in pieces, but car was perfect. Still have the car. ALso a 71 383 Cuda 4 speed with 20.000 in 85 for 500 $. 57 Bel Air 283 for 500$. GTO 69 coupe 600$. All in same period. 58 Cadillac for free. All these cars were in Italy, sold new there.

when I was a kid my dad and uncles were racing circle track. They use to buy 36 ford coupes and knock the fenders off with sledge hammers. They would torch the bodies off and slam them on the stock car chassis and go out for another weekend. Talking to him about it they estimated they went through 30-40 of them. After they dried up they started using 55 Chevys and went through 15-20 of those.

i was talking to a guy who is a big corvette nut. He collects the late 50s vettes. Anyways we got to talking about hotrods, and he tells me about his. Back when he was a teenager he brought home a duece coupe body for $25. Then he got a '34 frame for nothing. Some one told him that the duece body wouldnt work on the '34 frame, so he threw it all out.

    I hate stories like that....
