A friend recently tore my 9" rearend apart to rebuild and to see if it was welded or just what the problem was to cause it to act as if welded. Below are pics of what he found and his description. Anyone have any idea just what this is? All i have to say about when it was in my car that a bad transmission and backing out of a parking space didn't work too well and neither did corners in the rain, gravel or sandy pavement if gas was given too soon and too much!

Thanks for any thoughts or ideas!

** I found these 'square' spider gears that make it like a spool. When I saw them, they immediately reminded me of the locking devices used in the early factory A/FX and B/FX type cars. I have never seen a set but they look right.

They are numbered 4000 F 5 on each. I'll snap some better pics if needed.

They look a bit crude in the pics, but appear to actually be special forgings and were then machined to final dimensions.

Could a guy make that at home? But weld the shaved spiders to the shaft? Do you think it would hold for a light duty "Spool"?

Is there a name for them? Are they something that was made in the 60's or something that has been or still is made? Well maybe that question should be were they made until the traditional 9" wasn't anymore. :)
