pic request 1936 ford with a nailhead

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 1oldtimer, Sep 18, 2009.

  1. looking for engine bay pics (with firewall and radiator) of a '36 ford with a 364 or bigger nailhead. also great if anyone know the outside engine dimensions. found a '59 364 locally with a healthy cam and adjustable pushrods. haven't seen it yet but it's in my price range. so out comes the sbc, th350 in the '36 and in goes the 364 with an adapted 4spd?. i didn't want to cut the firewall but now i might have too.

If the SBC fit with the firewall I think you should be pretty good. I think 25" wide at the factory manifolds and from bell housing to front lip of bottom pulley 29" for a 401. Or at least that's what Flathead Bob measured. I can't find my list right now.

  3. thanks, that's good news. the '36 is STILL under construction so more mods won't be too bad. i read through some other nailhead posts on here, is the kits for running a th350 that bad? and are the buick 400's the same as the th400?.

I don't like the adapters. A ST400 or SP400 from a Nailhead equipped 64-66 Buick is definitely the way to go. And yes they are TH400's, or more correctly TH400s are ST400's.

just don't try to speed shift with the Saginaw. Nice deliberate shifts and you'll be ok.

  7. are you talking about no clutch shifting or just shifting quickly?

either really. the case of the saginaw is strong the internals not so much. So with that much torque it'll be nice deliberate shifts or a rebuild of the tranny.

Regardless of the engine dimensions - the starter and boss are on the driver side for the nailhead, and the distributor is angled back and towards the passenger side. Steering can also be tight getting high enough over the starter and past your exhaust manifold. But if you can get it all worked out it is definately worth it!!!!!!!!!

  10. and there's the downer.......:D. more mocking up to do.

i didn't think of the higher torque vs sbc, maybe on the look out for a t10 or a muncie.

  14. ok it looks good but needs a intake, exhaust manifolds and pulleys. the adjustable pushrods are still in it but it now has a stock cam. so anyone have pics of one in a 35/36 ford.

    It should fit a '36. Here's a 401 in a '33 Ford:

Things do get tight around the starter though.
