I just picked up a 51 business coupe and want to replace the steering rack. Ive looked at mus 2 and pinto racks, but they dont seem to look the same. Its that big bracket to the inside of the steering box thats throwing me off. Any help?
If you were looking at Mustang II racks, they would be the same 74-78 and Pinto 74 and later. The earlier Pinto rack was different.
That looks like an AMC Pacer front end. If so then that would be a Pacer rack. Looks stock to that crossmember to me.
The early Pinto, 71-73, used a rack very similar to that one. I'd find something a little more heavy duty, like 74-80 Pinto/Mustang II.
Im replacing everything from the steering wheel to the rack. It all looks really old and worn out. the steering binds pretty bad.
Go pull a wheel off and take a picture of the actual suspension so we have HALF a chance of figuring out what the IFS is from!
If it binds it might not be the right rack for the front end anyways, as someone else asked what is the rest of the suspension?
Maybe not, but it sure looks like one from here. The only thing that may indicate you are correct is the bolt for the lower control arm. It doesn't appear to have the eccentric adjuster. It's the rubber mount collar on the left side that is making e think this. The early Pinto racks had a cast flange that bolted directly to the crossmember sans the rubber collar. Maybe it's real early Pinto and I'm just unfamiliar with it.
