Quick Saturday Update. I didn't get all the slips. Fast time on Saturday was 8.40@80 with a 60' time of 1.99 (we're still racing tomorrow, Sunday) These tires seem to be pretty decent, all things considered. We have the air at 18psi to flatten the contact patch. 1.99 is decent on those trailer tires. Also, we're thinking more converter for next time. Problem with the transmission. This engine is all about top end. We'd like to be 5000-6000rpm with it. For whatever reason, even if held in 1st, the transmission is auto shifting to the next gear at 4300rpm. So that 8.40 pass was done short shifting the whole pass at 4300. Here's the first pass. Can't here much dragster in the near lane is pretty loud. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsHadexpR_E Here's the post race interview. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YloGjSPn6d4 Here's a pass with the Herminator, and my naturally aspirated Civic we set it up so we could run together this pass. The Civic ran 9.1 in this pass. the Civic with good air will run a 13.80@98, air today was about 6000' and 98 degrees. the Herminator car walked me hard the whole pass with an 8.48@80. I can't wait to see how it does when we can actually run it in the power, shifting at say 5500. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJj9ecp9B04
wow.....with some better tyres and gearshifting that thing is going to haul..... FUN/FUN/FUN Congrats guys.....now go and build another couple so you can race each other..... Note: bulid them together, have fun, ROCK on... Cheers, Drewfus
Sunday, 9-20-09 Got the first pass in today. Boiled the tires hard during the burnout. Got up to the line. Both tires spun well past the 60' mark up to around the 100-125' mark (see pic) and stabbed 2nd. He said he couldn't stab 3rd for some reason (mechanical issue) and still went out the top with an 8.627 @ 84.75, crossing the line at around 6400rpm. Would have been a nice run without the tire spin and hitting 3rd. Looks like the transmission is working now. Shifter needs adjusted. Engine raps hard and makes good power at 6400 (that's good information). I was dubious about even 5000 to begin with. Engine may be good to 7 grand. Warming up the engine in the pits. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0PYaKsHdEU Making the first pass on Sunday. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bs1F8FQbjoc
Then, after noticing we were down on traction... and being the prepared folks we are... we set it up a "different" way... Video from the staging lanes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATnPqMesHqo
Hi guys I gotta tel you I have been racing since '78 with little brakes here and there, it has always been V-8 and bigger the better and never an open cockpit. There are a few things that need to be addressed, better brakes, seat pad, you don't realize how hard that gets untill you sit in it for an hour or so. But I gotta admit it was as cool a race car as I have ever driven. Many thnx to Hermy,4th st. Machine,Vector, and Flash for helping make this happen. Next year there will be more straight 6 powered machines out of our shop I have a feeling, maybe not all HA/GR style though. Well gotta go but thnx again for following and helping a lot of our idea's came from you guys and your cars. Hope we didn't offend anyone we are just doing what moves us. Patch
Curious, where are you guys hiding, been a while since we've seen what crazy things you've been tinkering with, good/bad & ugly.... What 1/4 time/speed did that new engine reward you with? Cheers, Drewfus
LONG winters here. usually 3-4 months with snow on the ground. We still have it. *sigh*. our tracks schedule shows first race of the year as May 22... That's still 3 months away... I know Patch came over to the shop a week ago and we bent some DOM tubing and he's in the middle of making a "3-singles" intake manifold for it. I should get with him and take some pics of that process.
Hey Vector you should come on by and check out the new intake it swelled up a little bit, some of these people might like to see it now.
I think we found a completer donor for our next version of an HA/GR. It's a 1975 Monza with a manual trans and an inline-4. Just gotta whip up a frame and toss Monza crap on it until it's done. We'll see, gonna poke around on that Monza and do some "re-con" in the next few days. IF we can make it run and drive as a Monza... I think we're all on-board with the idea locally (our build crew). be a LOT quicker this second time. We learned a lot of stuff on the Herminator. The "Herminator" and now, potentially, "the Monzta". Hmm, might have to work on the name. That's always the best place to start with a car.
Well, Montana awakes from its winter slumber. And does it with outstanding e.t.'s! That's gotta be a fun ride. Vector, where did you find the 292 Propane pistons?
Here's our new intake We also got rid of the hand brake. now it's a foot brake. More pics of it are here, might have to scroll to the end to see the newest pictures. http://www.flickr.com/photos/34098323@N02/sets/72157621956342021/
1/8 mile. Time slips, the new stuff is at the bottom. 60 ft.......et......mph 9-5-2009 2.325, 9.686@74.13 stock 1 bbl carb and manifold 2.703, 10.77@72.69 2.155, 9.486@72.22 9-19-2009 1.995, 8.481@80.64 upgraded to a 2bbl carb, and the zoomie exhaust. Some "tinkering" over the winter (and a few extra carbs)... got us these results below. 6-26-2010 2.047, 9.646@72.58, street tires, smoked 'em, whole pass. 13psi in tires 1.834, 7.852@87.72, slicks 5.5psi in tires 1.763, 7.845@87.72, slicks 1.764, 7.816@86.87, slicks 6-27-2010 1.959, 8.098@86.20, street tires, left tire 5.5, right tire 5.5psi 1.907, 7.921@88.06, street tires, left tire 5.5, right tire 6.0psi 1.707, 7.732@82.26, street tires, left tire 5.5, right tire 6.5psi (dry burnout) Last run, the 7.732 was the only run that we did a burnout on the street tires. Or trailer tires... as the case may be. Looks like the tires liked it. and that 1.707 sixty... on junk tires... that's freaking amazing to me.
WTF is that silver thing....? and the monster tach? you guys don't need that fancy stuff....not into the spiderweb (although I would be interested to know more about that 'type of silencing technology'), but the rest is intersting, those speeds times look like you're starting to really get that thing motoring, great to see the car is still getting used/loved. Cheers, Drewfus Got a PM for you too...
Hi Drewfus, OK I'll give you that one the tach is over the top and will come out, but we got a pile of time"and maybe a little ching" into that motor and I just wanted to see how many rippem's it would turn after it's massage. But your right we don't need it, that engine is bulletproof. Now the scoop I thought we would get an atta-boy for useing old road signs and not buying it, we just want to have a lot of fun without spending a lot of money. I know its hard to believe but we only have about $1100 dollars into this car and its almost all in the engine. Every piece of this car except the steel came from the boneyard. So in short we just hope you folks enjoy what we have put together even if it is an auto car. this is one wild ride. Thanx for riding along guys.
What you don't see on the spider webbing is the clear plastic film that makes it a sail. Catches the crosswind and adds that extra push. Clear like that so's the techs'll miss it too. Heck, I didn't even see it 'til I ran that refractive indexing program on the picture. Big enough tach so you can see it, shift notifier light so you'll remember to ...... All looks perfectly reasonable to me. Good that you changed those bald tires out though, safer now. As to the scoop, it's nice and all but how're folks supposed to find your street now? Lot of time and work in a beautiful car, gentlemen, a fun ride for sure. ps. I still love the "geezer step" the most.
I'll take credit for that one. I still don't know why we don't see more of that. Made good sense to me.
XS, appologies if I came across as a whinger and dumping on you, as I really think the car is awesome (as a package), and a real credit to you guys on a number of levels. My sentiments on the scoop is that it whilst Patch did a neat job, creative and all, it kinda visually distracts from the great work you've done, and doesn't make sense, surely it's got to comprimise the air/fuel mixture between the start line and finishline with the dramatic variation in airflow? Anyhow, my perspective on the little bolt-ons is not to undermine my admiration of your car, a credit to you, especially with the speeds its getting now, job well done. I trust you've enjoyed the development process, and look forward to seeing the 'second' one so you can race yourselves Cheers, Drewfus
Hey Drewfus the build was and is still the most fun the four of us ever had together this group of guys are a hoot to work with, that is probably the reason I can't stop working and changing things. We really do have more fun building than driving. Oh about the air scoop throw some ideas at us and we''ll see what we can come up with, sometimes I have a bad case of tunnel vision and can't see the forest for the trees. You guys have some of the coolest builds I've seen, so I do value your opinion. So keep the comments coming thnx Patch
I would like to know more about 6RODDER's refractive indexing program, we really didn't think any of you would catch that let alone have an indexing program.
So check this out. We find out today, that we had a push rod pushed through a rocker, and a subsequent dead cylinder on that 7.7 pass. Doing some maintenance, took the engine out of the car again. Looks like it's time for some kind of aftermarket rockers. We're hoping to get it all back together for an event in Lewistown Montana July 17th weekend. Be nice to get an actual quarter mile pass. rather than all the 1/8 mile stuff. The density altitude is generally not good there though (might not get that 11 second pass). Last time I was down there, it was 8800'. That's hard on a man's ego.
hey guys, ya car is looking awesome and some wild times ya r pullin there just got the chev back together as we gave it a over haul after 12 months of racing (17 meetings) and we didnt have the $$$ to do the head when we first built it so its had a head job and had the ports machined out to 1"3/4 to match the manifold and carbs some new bearing so hoppe it goes hard for the Nationals in 4 weeks, its sad to see other peoples opinons on ya car when they dont even get there hambster to the track at all hope ya keepin well guys take care Steve ps the web work is mad
Imagine if the guy that did that had two eyes instead of one!? I think he was trying to connect the engine to the frame, and some bad depth perception lead to the web thing... He's just trying to cover up some bad welding... Some of which, I probably did to top it all off... HA!
It's Thursday night, we race on Saturday... Engine and trans are out of the car. Doing the lump port head thing. some images of the rocker and pushrod failure. Frankly, I'm a bit dubious we'er gonna get this thing to the track this weekend, considering it's still apart and all over the garage...
Looking at your pics in #154 it looks like you could use a few more psi's based on the foot print your leaving.
