ok so I just bought a 61 falcon 2 weeks ago and had to fix some things. When I got it sometimes it would lag and sputter when pushing on the gas and trying to move forward, I was having trouble getting it started and sometimes after a 15-20 mins drive 50+mph it would stall coming to a stop. The Carb looked to be original so I had I replaced it yesterday with a brand new holly swap. It also was leaking from the weep hole on the fule pump so I replaced that today. The problem im having is it still kinda lags and sputters when I go forward sometimes and it sputtered alot making a left U-turn also When pulling it up in the driveway today it almost stalled I just wanted to move my car forward closer to the garage and I was kinda rolling backwards. Any idea what the problem is? Thanks a lot in advance for the help.

One other question is there a easy cheap way to make an over flow for the radiator? if so how? everytime I go out for a drive my **** leaks and I cant afford a new one at this time.

Hmmm... at this point it can be a handful of things, but just out of curiosity, how hot is it out there right now? It might be vapor locking and starving for fuel if you drive it for a while and it stalls out. Next time it does that, take off the gas cap and try to start it.

I'm not a Falcon expert, but i'm not sure if a '61 had an overflow bottle. That one might be old enough to just have a tube down the side of the radiator to spill out on the ground. Keep in mind that in older cars not equipped with an overflow bottle, the top tank IS the "overflow". Cheap insurance is to buy a new radiator cap, and make sure it's the CORRECT LBS for that model.

If you can, run a clear fuel filter right before the carb, and run another clear filter right outside the gas tank. See if there's a ton of crud in the rear filter after running it for a few miles. If there is, you could just have a bunch of **** stuck in the tank/lines. Next time the car ****s out on ya, take a peek at the filter you put infront of the carb to see if it's full of fuel or not too...

These are just a few things, but keep it simple with this problem... Falcon's aren't very complex cars, don't over think it lol...

    Good luck,

    -Chris

Sounds like it could be **** in the tank that is gathering around the pickup tube causing lots of problems. I had a similar situation with an El Camino one time and the problem turned out to be the filter thingy at the end of the pickup tube in the gas tank was plugged up with stuff. I'd drop the fuel tank and check the sending unit and the inside of the tank for crud and also blow out the fuel line with compressed air. Good Luck!

check the points and see if they need to be adjusted. that could also cause that to happen.

you said your trans is leaking in another post? the 2speeds need there fluid,, keep it topped up... check for vacuum leaks and your timing. and adjust the carb, you said its new, did you set it up to idle, fast idle, air mixture, etc?

you replaced the stock carb on an engine equipped with the Loadamatic distributor; this is one engine that has matched carb and distributor in order to get good mileage and what WAS considered decent acceleration for a compact in 1960. if you still have the stock carb, get a rebuild kit and put it back on. the vacuum source for the distributor is ported through the venturi and is definitely load-sensitive. other problems pointed out are crud in the lines/pickup tube, a good flush and new filters will help; make sure you don't have vacuum leaks at the carb base. the Falcon six is a tough little beast but suffers if there's too many issues for it to handle.

i THINK you can replace the stock dist with a newer one BUT beware that the oil pump drive shaft comes in two flavors, 1/4" and 5/16". you could install DSII electronic ignition with a replacement carb and not worry about spark control valve (you thought that was '80's technology?)

there's a wealth of info on fordsix.com to help with this engine.

  7. Another thing to check... when I first got mine it had a sputter under acceleration that got worse after it ran awhile.
I reset the points then noticed the coil appeared to be an ancient piece.
One new coil later and she runs like a champ, good luck.

Thanks for all the help. where do I start....? the fuel filter in the front is clean as a whistle. Ill look into putting one in the back to see what happens. The carb is a rebuilt stock holly carb and was already adjusted before installation they company said. the radiator has the down tube but it must be blocked because it leaks from the cap and not the tube. might sounds dumb but what are points? how do I check them? how do I check for vac***e leaks? and how do I see if theres **** in the tank if its filled with gas? This is my daily driver so I dont know how I could check the tank?
