I've asked people wearing his cloth, what it means their answer 97% of the time is, "it's a clothing line"

many moons ago I bought a Von Dutch shirt at Paso. just a blue T shirt with a pinstripe design on it and the Von Dutch label. I'd guess it was one of the first designs. I should have not worn it and sold it today on ebay for 500 bucks to a collector.

LOL, I have one given to me as a gift. I wore it in the shop a couple of times and it sits in a drawer. Maybe it's still worth $20

I have a Von Dutch shirt (un-official) flying eyeball, some striping and the word "no respect for the name" on it

Christian Audigier = the new hitler, he is the one that makes VON DUTCH clothing, he is also the one that makes ED HARDY clothing. Ed Hardy's (Norman Collins Apprectice) name Norman Collin's(Salior Jerry)artwork. Talk about disrespect!

p.s. those shirts cost 5X what a Von Dutch shirt cost!

Yeah the Ed Hardy stuff tickles the **** out of me. I think someone out there has a sick sense of humor that is making them millions.

It's interesting how this thread has stirred so many emotions.

It is just a knife ... a nice one, but still just a knife. And $19,000+ seems high for something like that, but if someone wants it , and has the money, more power to them. Spend their money as they may.

As for Von Dutch, he may not have been a heroic figure, but his influence on the hot rod and custom world cannot be denied. I think as long as the so called "Kustom Kar Kulture" scene is relevent, he will be historically significant. And, probably when future historians are studying 20th century pop culture, there will be an ****ysis of his contributions.

I never met the guy. From what I've read over the years, I've come to the conclusion that he was a complex man who had personality issues. For whatever reason, he unfortunately had a lot of bitterness toward society. BUT, I believe the man was a creative genius, maybe a tormented genius, but a genius nevertheless. History has been full of 'em.

Sorry to go on here, but I'll state this, Von Dutch, whether he intended it or not, figures large in hot rod history. I for one revere the history, if not the man.

Robert Williams said that anytime Von Dutch is discussed,an argument ensues.

Howard was probably a manic depressive and with the mix of alcohol....well?
I'd think "Von Dutch" was a role he'd step into when customers or fans were around and maybe at the end of the day Kenneth Howard would emerge and shake his head?

I like his craft work, his iden***y doesn't much interest me.Life has too many "characters" and if you want notoriety or attention, switch on the "character."
It's a shame integrity is slowly dying out?

  18. As a knife collector for the last 50-odd years and having examined a couple of Von Dutch's knives,I feel that his work was on a par with other knife makers of the period. There were makers that did far superior work and some not.

The knife market today is in a bit of flux:prices are way down due to the downturn in the economy and even the high dollar buyers have cut back considerably.A Bill Moran Damascus fighter that would easily have brought $15K-plus several years ago would be lucky to realize half that amount today.Likewise Heinrich Frank's incredibly beautiful folders.

That said it is still a wide open market.Someone once told me that the true value of a knife(or any object for that matter)is what the buyer is willing to spend and what the seller is willing to let it go for.

While I would love to have a knife made by Von Dutch in my collection(3,000 plus and counting),for the money I would have to lay out for one I could purchase several excellent knives by other more prominent makers.

I would agree that e-Bay is probably not the best venue for selling that knife, but it would also probably be worse trying to sell it at a regular knife auction such as Greg Martin's or Sotheby's as the people that attend them could care less who Von Dutch was.

In closing I would also say that if I could obtain a Von Dutch knife,I would prefer a folding model rather than a fixed blade.

    LOL.....

yea this one has a little more history than the last von dutch knife I made a shifter out of..... (yes... I'm serious) about 1992 I believe..... I bet I can find a picture of it....

took a piece of 3/8th stainless rod and mated it to the knife..... Looked KILLER...

more importantly use to piss everyone off when they saw it.........or at least the people that found out what it was.

the REALLY kool part was the knife was used every day as a shifter and displayed at every car show.....

what the hell was (or would I know) do with a knife like that????
    1. keep it in my trophy case to show off how much I paid for it????
    2. use it in fights when the Soc's come cause trouble with the greasers?????
    3. Shank a guy in prison????
    4. Carve my steak???
    5. wear it on my hip so every time I get a speeding ticket I'm cuffed and tasered???

sold the shifter with the car....

his artwork is kool... the knives, guns, ect are kool........ but they are not all priceless or even all good....

i've also seen some of his art, guns, and knives I didn't care for at all.....

so yea... I'd weld it onto a shifter......

Yeah, the hype's over. Ed Hardy's all the rage- currently.
What's next... Robert Williams? I can just imagine all the clueless schissen wearing their "Genuine RW" clothing/hats/pants/etc.
I always got a kick out of asking people about their Von Dutch stuff. "Was it the pinstriping or the N azi fascination that you admired most?" Usually stopped them in their tracks.
I will always admire the art and his influence on the world of hot rodding. Same thing w/ Roth's stuff- hell, my kids recognize Rat Fink without batting an eye.

Actually, with Roth, I'll miss reading his adventures at "the Wal Marts" w/ his wife.
Those columns in "Drive" (I think that's what it was in) used to crack me up.

Yeah Von Dutch was a little wierd... My grandfather hung with some guys back in the day that introduced him to V.D... he said he was smoking pot and rolling around on roller skates... My grandpa wasn't too impressed. He also didn't like his at***ude.

  26. I went to Von Dutch's place in '68 to get my panhead painted. I was a dumb kid, fresh from Vietnam and thought he'd just paint it up real quick and that would be that. He wasn't home, but one of his guys was. He told me that I couldn't afford it on my military salary, so I grabbed a card and left. Painted it myself with spray cans.
I met him twice, once a Dave Ekins' shop on Sherman Way and Laurel Canyon in North Hollywood where he was finishing the restoration of an Emblem M/C for Harrah. It was impeccable. He was a ****head.
The second time was on Hwy 126 near Fillmore at a roadside produce stand. I saw a beautiful Guzzi Falcone with a side car sitting alone in the parking lot. On the seat of the hack was his engraved chrome German helmet. I coulda swiped it in a heartbeat and I knew what it was, but I have this accursed honest streak. He eventually mosied over to the bike and I started to talk to him. I never let on that I knew who he was. This time he was a ****head and a lunatic, prattling on and on about government conspiricies, how money had no value, how all of our birth records were forged and so on. I slowly backed away and split. He was almost certainly, a genius. They say there is a fine line separating genius from insanity. VD crossed the line at will and often

I've got that one too. I got on my shop teacher's good side in high school when he asked me if I knew anything about the flying eyeball I was wearing. Guess he thought I didn't get it.

I think the knife's pretty cool. I wouldn't buy it, but it's still cool to see.

Sounds like he was feeling you out and it looks like you didn't p***.
One has to love how Dutch is remembered as a crazy Nazi.
Germany exemplifies the pinnacle of European culture and at the forefront of modern engineering, science, and culture.
Anyone ever hear of Otto and Benz?
Dutch also had more than a little clue about where the US was heading and it is a shame you didn't pay attention to what he was trying to tell you.

Soooo, I guess y'all can put me down as a ****head lunatic Nazi insane genius.

    Baaaaaa baaaaaaa baaaaaa baaaaaa
