Hey Guyz , i'm in the midst of 53 Super Roadmaster buildup, and was just wondering if anyone has a prefrence of what rear gl*** and frame to use ,as i am about to chop the ol' girl???
Since you asked, my preference would be to not chop it...such a sleek, beautiful hardtop roof line from the factory. I think you'd lose some of the essence of the car if you went away from the wrap-around back gl***... BTW, is it a "Super" or a "Roadmaster"? I have heard many refer to the 1950's Buick hardtops as "Riviera's" but Super & Roadmaster were different trim levels...Does your car have 3 portholes or 4? 3=Super or Special, while 4=Roadmaster or Century if memory serves... Have you seen tylerdurben's chop? His is a '51 Special, but it may give you some ideas... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=381801
Don't know about the rear gl***, but when I chopped my 52 Super, I got a 53 Skylark windshield which was a 2 3/4 in. chop for my car. Saves cutting the stock windshield, but of course Skylark windshields are getting hard to find.
Thanx for the quick response guyz, i almost feel obligated to fire up the sawzall right now!! BigRed , it's a Roadmaster with 4 portholes, this thing came FULLY loaded, i'm talking heated seats, power everything, i'm not much on knowledge of Buick's , i just really liked the lines of the car , i'm kinda getting some history lesson's as i progress with the build!
I used a 50 chevy rear window and frame. The chevy is smaller so you will need to plan out the belt line trim. I noticed that 53 chevy is a little bit wider then the 50 chevy. Buicks are wider then chevys. If your not going for a huge chop you can just sink the stock gl*** in the trunk. But anything over 4" you will need to use something different. Check out my build.. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=305691
Nice work boy'z , i think i'm even more confused now , HAha . I don't like mistakes, so i really gotta think this one through, Keep'em coming!!!
my suggestion would be the stock rear windows. either slide them forward to meet the roof. or lengthen the roof to meet the gl***. those rear windows are so short from the factory you could barely see 200 feet behind you in the mirror.
If in fact it´s a Roadmaster Riviera, In that case You just might do well leaving it the way ol Harley E. intended. Just my 2c, but then You did ask. What kind of motor is that, anyway, BTW?
NOT everything has to be chopped to enhance body lines...sometimes overchopping results in simply ****ing up an otherwise gorgeous car... R-
I wouldn't chop it, but that's just me, you do what you want it's yours. I had a 53 and it was a Super Riviera edition. Roadmaster has four port holes the Riv has three, quick way to tell. Good luck which ever you decide to do. Rags
