I have done a search & found out where to find my serial number on my 55 F-100. What I can't find & need an answer to is How many digits should there be? I don't have a plate on the inside of the door or anywhere else I can see. I found my serial # on right hand frame rail but it's very light. I'm trying to find out how many numbers & letters there should be. Thanks for any help.
The plate on these trucks was attached to the inside of the glove box door. The first three digits were the model (F10=1/2 ton), next digit was the engine code, next was model year, next was assembly plant, and the numbers at the end were consecutive unit numbers.
A 6cyl 55 Ford Pickup will have serial # beginning with F10D5 followed by parenthesis enclosing the one character (plant code) then the sequential assembly numbers. A V8 55 Ford Pickup will have serial # beginning with F10V5, then as 6 cylinder.
Thanks a lot for the info. The paint code number doesn't match the color, but I did "decipher" all the numbers.
Hey Gator-hope this helps- my 63 F100 had the VIN stamped on top of the right frame rail below the cab (pretty close to where the battery lives under the floor on a 55 truck). You can see it with a flashlight and mirror. The reason I had to find it is that in 63 the "data plate" that was on the drivers door is normally the reference point to check the VIN , but the door had been replaced. YIKES!! no matching VIN to the title I got. luckily it turned out OK. So check your frame- I think you'll find it somewhere. Pete
