The same R&D program resulted in the 429 in '68, the 351C in '70 & the 400 in '71. They dropped the C @ the end of '74 & then the Windsor plant couldn't keep up with demand & they destroked the 400 for the 351M. The M came out in the no performance smog era with low performance compared to the C & are generally viewed as a red headed step brother of the C.
351C shares many Windsor traits - engine mounts, bellhousing, bore spacing, etc. 400M shares mounts & bellhousing w/429/460 (385 Liima series) 351M is destroked 400M - you can actually put a 400M crank into a 351W with a bit of machining...think Ford did it because of production capacity for 351W being exceeded with large cars (ie - Windsor couldn't keep up) 400M came out in 71 or 72 and the 351M in 75, I think...
Yep, you can turn down a 400m crank to fit a 351w and with a .030 overbore you'll end up with a 408 " windsor stroker. Throw in a set of 8 300 ci six cylinder rods and some custom pistons with 4v cleavland heads and a "clevor" intake manifold and you will have one HELL of a good poor mans race motor with the right cam... I run this combo in 2800 lb car and it runs 10.08 at 132 mph with nearly all factory ford internals.
Don't let anybody tell you 4V Clevelands are soft... Thats just Bull Shit! Thats an old wives tale. Most built Clevelands will kick the shit out of a windsor. Personal experience. Kevin Ooltewah Speed Shop
