So I just got the beginner kit from Kustom shop. I got 5 paints, KSE-707 reducer, and a mac brush. I also bought Brush preserving oil KB211 and a finer brush. I want to start sripping but don't know exactly how to clean my brush. I know there is a special way. I read a description on one site and then at the bottom there was a side note saying there is a different way if using Kustom Shop (thanks for clearing that up after I read the article). I am also not 100% sure what to do with the lettering reducer? Thanks guys.
the reducer helps ya get the paint to the consistency you need to get the paint to flow off the brush. usually dont take much, add slowly i clean my brushes in cheap lacquer thinner, as a preservative i have been using olive oil lately. over the years i have tried many different oils, bout the same results. not at all familular with the brand you mention, so this may not apply skull
Thanks for the reply. Should I rinse under water? I read no a web site that you use mineral stuff to wash the brush unless you have the lustom shop stuff. Is it okay if I just use the oil I have (KB211) and nothing else. Or do I have to rinse it? Thanks man!
what ever paint you use, must be rinsed off. then the brush needs some type of treatment. (oil) keep them in a closed container, carefully placed. sounds like your stuff may be water based ,or something. most use one shot, hok striping colors, or just plain basecoat. i havent used a water based striping paint that i liked, but that dont mean it aint out there. sorry i cant be of more help with that brand skull
You can use mineral spirits (paint thinner) or the KSE-707 to wash your brushes. The same stuff you use to thin your paint. The oil is to keep the bristles soft after the brush is clean. Like skull said, the reducer gets the paint the correct viscosity. Too thin the paint will spread or run, too thick it will drag and you can get dry brush lines. It's something that take time to get the right "feel". You will know when it's right. Get a sheet of glass and practice, practice practice.
I'm not familiar with kustom shop, is it an acrylic? Water based? I use One Shot, lettering enamel, oil based.
Take the Kustom shop, throw it in the trash, and start fresh with one-shot. Sorry if i'm short and i didn't want to come off that way but i just got done writing you a fifteen minute long message complete with step by step instructions on cleaning your brush, hit submit, i wasn't logged in, and my computer locked up. if ya really wanna know tha right way to clean a brush and all the pros and cons of oneshot an kshop, i have the answers. send me a private message and i can help.
wait- i just found out you're from sacramento-***** you man you're on your own. Haha jk man. I'm from auburn but there's always room for more stripers in the area. for sure shoot me a message sometime man.
DO NOT USE mineral spirits (paint thinner) with the Kustom Shop Lettering Enamel. It will gum up and trash the brush. Use lacquer thinner to clean out your brushes. 1-Shot use Paint thinner to clean Kustom Shop use lacquer thinner to clean. Good luck striping, remember practice is the key to learning how to pinstripe.
Thanks guys. I live in Dubai now though. As you can see on my location I have two places. Just got back from Sacramento yesterday and bought the Kustom shop so I am stuck with it as I can't get anything over hear.
If you wanna start "stripping" you could check out THE EMBERS on AUBURN blvd. they got a good pole.. but you'll have to change your name to***** TUCKER and wear bigger********....
Clean your brushes in mineral spirits and store them in motor oil (new oil, that is). They will last forever that way and by then you will decide if you can letter or stripe with them... It's a life long progress. Just when you think you got it down... you have a bad brush day. Kevin Ooltewah Speed Shop
Thanks everyone for your help. I think I got it fugured out. I laid down my first stripping and it turned out really good. I can lay down a pretty straight line. The only problem is I think I had to much paint on the brush and I need to palet more. Some of my lines were a little choppy also.
add a little more reducer when they get choppy. get the real slow stuff, works better for striping than the quicker stuff skull
If you're just starting to stripe, stick with One Shot paints . They're a lot more "user friendly". good luck !
