  1. In MA you can run YOM in place of Antique plates. You only need one. The plate will be registered and may become property of the RMV.Unless they are lost!
An old car can be registered as an antique as long as it still sorta looks like it did when manufactured. At least that's what I was told on the "Help Line".
I recently registered a 31 I had "from my Dad" that I got in 68 and kept stored 'till now. Had to have the VIN verified, fill out the "Gift from family member" form , for sales tax exemption, and have a theft report from the same law enforcement athority that did the VIN verification. That was the only hard part as they wanted the RMV to run it.
Then I also had to write a affidavit stating that all was true and have it all that notarized. Which the ins. agent did.
The RMV was very helpful in getting me through this. They even had a "Situation" barn find thing to do the same thing as long as it's all true and you do the affidavit your all set. I'll post the yom law here.
Also the antique/yom is 25% of the normal ins. fee.
Have to reregister every year in Nov.
    Definitions:
    Only
motor vehicles meeting the definition of an “Antique motor car” may display an Antique registration plate. At the
    discretion of the Registrar, a
Year of Manufacture registration plate may be issued for display on an “antique motor
    car” in place of an
    Antique registration plate.
    An “antique motor car” is
any motor vehicle over twenty-five years old maintained solely for use in exhibitions, club
activities, parades, and other functions of public interest. This includes test drives to prepare for such functions and
transportation to and from repair facilities, and not used primarily for the transportation of passengers or goods over any
    way. A
motorcycle is eligible for an Antique registration plate.
    A “
Year of Manufacture Plate” is a registration plate (in the possession of the Applicant) originally issued by the
Commonwealth in the exact year of manufacture of the antique motor car to which it is proposed to be attached. If no
registration plate(s) was issued in a particular year, a registration plate originally issued in a prior year may be approved
by the Registrar for use as a Year of Manufacturer Plate on the "antique motor car" to which it is proposed to be attached.
Year of Manufacture Vanity Plates or Year of Manufacture Antique Plates are not available.

    RMV Policies for Use of
    Year of Manufacture Plates:

    1. The vehicle owner must complete this
Application and sign in the presence of a Notary.
    2. The plate must be physically presented to the Registrar for inspection and approval.
    (i) The plate can contain no more than six (6) characters.
(ii) The plate must be in good repair
and in original condition. Its letters, numbers and markings must be
clearly legible. Any indication that the plate has been repainted or otherwise altered will cause the Registrar to
    reject use of the plate.
(iii) The plate must be sufficiently distinctive in appearance so as not to be confused with currently issued plates.
If the Registrar has already approved the use of a plate as a
Year of Manufacture plate, which contains a
specific combination of letters and numbers (or letters or numbers alone), that same combination on a
    different
Year of Manufacture plate is not sufficiently distinctive and will not be approved as another Year of
    Manufacture
    plate.
    (iv) A
Year of Manufacture plate may be approved by the Registrar for use on an antique motor car of a different
type than that for which the registration plate was originally issued. For example, a truck plate may be
approved for use on an antique automobile and an automobile plate may be approved for use on an antique
truck. (A motorcycle plate can only be used on a motorcycle, however.)
    (v) The Registrar may approve of the display of only one (1)
Year of Manufacture plate (if that is all that is
available) even though the RMV issued two (2) plates per vehicle in the year the plate was originally issued.
    (vi) A
Year of Manufacture plate must be displayed pursuant to Chapter 90, Section 6 of the General Laws but
the registration decal for the current registration period need not be attached to the plate. If it is not attached to
the plate it must be carried in the antique vehicle at all times and presented at the request of a Police Officer.
(vii) A plate displaying the word “Antique” CANNOT be used as a “Year of Manufacture Plate.”

Note: If your Year of Manufacture plate is ever suspended or revoked, the Registrar may require the plate
be turned in to the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

I have never tried to take an old plate and have it registered, I just know IA is pretty tough to win over at the DMV. The old plates are different sizes the farther you go back. My suggestion would be if you wanted a certain plate on your car, say for example you have a plate with the Letter " X31 45A" and it was the original plate, try and get that PERSONALIZED plate in the current year tag. if you get it then when a cop runs it, it will come back to you on the reg.

Or take in the plate, have them inspect it, maybe they will issued you a reg for those old plates as stated above, keep the new IA plates in the vehicle that match the old ones and go from there.

Brad, looking forward to those pics. I have a 1950 Chevy 4 door right now I've been debating on painting it black and white and cruising it, then when my Model A is done have my wife drive the A and I could chase her with the cop car!!! lol

I'll probably sell everything in my life before that ever happens though.

  4. Just a little end of summer update, I drove around all summer with the YOM plates on the car and never got stopped or even looked at funny once. And I wasnt just driving to or on cruises or to an event, I drive to work, buddys houses out in the middle of nowwhere and just cruise, So far so good.

Been running them for 19 years and was asked only once because my wife's 73 Vette has a 73 Dealer tag on it. You can no longer register a dealer tag in MI but it Grandfathers in. Cop smiled and moved on.

A few years ago I got a cheesy $22.00 ticket on my daily, parked overnight in the street with no front plate. Scooter cop musta been bored...

  10. Friendly sherrif's deputy stopped to help when Buford konked out on me earlier this year. He looked at my YOM plate and just said "That a '38 truck?" North Carolina law says you can display any plate you want as long as you have the DMV provided and registered tag in the glovebox to present to an officer. Never been hassled or heard of anyone who has around here.

Also here in Washington when you use yom plates the car is no longer car car in the eyes of the state it is a piece of equipment for limited use. The crap thing is if its a truck you are not allowed to haul anything in it. And also you are limited to how often you can drive it. As far as here in Olympia they will pull you over with the plates and raise a stink. "Sir do you know your tags expired in 1969?" said the cop .You learn the ins and outs of the laws real fast over here:(

    California's first plates were issued for/in 1914.
So I guess you can't get or use a YOM plate for a '08-'13 Model T here?

I think the VIN should just be put on a just-big-enough-to-read-from-25-feet plate permanently on the back of every PASSENGER car for the cops ID desires and that's it. No state plate, no annual tags, just the VIN plate.
No State's money grabbing annual registration and no fees to cover every other expense in the State budget.
Just a charge for the true cost of handling the paperwork when changing ownership.

We have a constitutional right to personal interstate travel.
ANY restrictions of that RIGHT are WRONG.

(I'm not wanting to get into driver's operation licenses except to say there's plenty of people with one who shouldn't have one and plenty of people without one who are competent enough to drive, but choke when confronted by the sometimes arbitrary testers or tests.)

    I still hold by what I said before when it comes to hotrods and customs though;
