Chipmunks are driving me nuts!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by oldpaint, Sep 24, 2009.

  1. My cat got rid of all our chipmunks. I had a customers truck that was running rough, went to change the air filter and the filter box was filled to the top with hickory nuts.Another customer they chewed a hole in his plastic fuel line and the plastic fittings on the charcoal canister which cost him over $125.

used to have chipmunks in the stone wall at my parents house that would wake us up at about 5 am. dad put me in charge of there removal so I went and got some mouse traps but they wouldn't kill a munk, so I found some bigger springs to beef em up which just pulled the wimpy staples right out of the wood, so I got a couple nails and used em like U bolts through wood and bent over on the other side. after some fine tuning of the catch mechanism I had a chipmunk killing device that would break your finger if you weren't careful setting it down! caught a mouse in it once, sliced its head clean off.....

get a few traps like this and put them inside the frame rails.

  4. I use moth balls to keep rats from nesting in the engine compartment. Never had a problem since. Just make sure that children, your pets, and your neighbors pets cannot access them. I put them in a sturdy plastic container and punch holes in it. All you need is the odor for it to be effective.

Have a heart trap works also. My father in law caught over 20 one summer. On one particular morning there was one in the trap but Jim was at work so my mother in law took the trap with her to the park. She asked some other walkers to give her a hand letting it go. They got the trap out of the trunk and over to the field they walked. When they opened the trap the chipmunk ran out like a shot across the field, but before he could make it to safety on the opposite side a hawk swooped down and picked it up. Bad kharma for that critter.

Oh yea, mothballs will take care of your particular problem.

OldPaint, yes sir, THIS is a major-league problem for anybody who isn't blessed with a decent-closing building to keep his car or boat in. Sometimes it can seem as if you're swimming against the tide when you invest tme, blood & money in making PROGRESS. Then, these varmints come along and chew up rubber lines, wiring, upholstery, etc.!

THANKS for posting this! Some GREAT suggestions (AND some very funny ones, too!) BTW, for the INTERIOR of an old car, I like good old-fashioned mouse traps.

I am an animal lover, but I hate these little pricks. We have a growing population of these little striped ground squirrels that burrow into the ground, under my garage floor, sheds, etc.. I trapped 35 of these two years ago...and now that I slacked off, they're back with a vengence. I am stuck live trapping since my kids dont want me to murder them. A pile of corn and sunflower seeds brings them in ...record is 8 in one day(one trap).

My rodent problem has been field mice/rats. I've found that they use any clutter or debris nearby as cover while getting to your old car. Thus make sure you don't have any tall grass, weeds, engine blocks etc. in between you and the wilderness. I've also found success in finding snake sheddings and stuffing them in entrance cavities.

Squirrels though? They run a long way between trees, and love to tease dogs. They do learn quickly that a pellet gun is bad news. The only other thing you could do is make that frame as unattractive as possible for food storage. Snake sheddings, moth balls, Keep stealing their food. Hell, if you worked on it more than once every few weeks it might make a difference.

if you have a lot of them, find yourself a rat snake, if there's food they will hang around, the snake smell will also deter anymore from showing up. I have a large one in my garage loft, he eats the critters, i give him a place to hide. :)

Snakes dont last long in the snow...
if you plug any holes with steal wool they will not bite into it. temporary fix for you. We used to smoke them out when on the farm. pour a small amount of dirty engine oil mixed with diesel down the hole and light it. Plug that hold with a piece of board and the smoke will kill them or drive them away.

We used to trap squirrels in grannys yard, take them to the country 5 miles away. 3 days later n they would be back. We spay painted one orange and tested his internal GPS. He made it 7 miles back. then we tried 10 miles and he never came back.

Didn't read the whole thread but if anybody else hasn't mentioned it
GET A CAT right away. I had the same problem. Your dogs are chasing off all the neighbor cats. Get your own and let your dogs get used to him, her and your problem will be over.

Try tucking a few bars of irish spring soap in the frame rails. It works for mice so it should work on chips also. It cant hurt for sure and you sure will small purdey after working on the frame!

I had squirrels destory the wiring harness in my truck. I went to wal-mart and bought an el-cheapo pellet rifle w/ scope. Best thing I ever did, killed over 80 in about a year n' a half. Watch out though...some neighbors DON'T appreciate it. Had the cops called on me once, they were pretty cool about it though....got off w/ a warning.

Best thing for rodent control is a outside cat that knows how to hunt or a small trained terrier dog.The rodents get the message pretty quickly and get the fuck out of Dodge. We had nasty red squirrels but our cat chewed off the heads of a mess of them. Then lined up the bodies like a Mob hit.You can shoot em,but they jusy keep on a coming cause they don't sense a predator nearby.

I live in the woods too, one of my late models is a Ford truck that sits for weeks without being driven. About a month ago I needed to get some supplies and the check engine light was on. I opened the hood and fu^king chipmunks had chewed up a bunch of wiring, vacum lines, the insulation around my battery, and all the foil around my a/c, not to mention all the acorn bits all over the place. Anyway, replaced the vacum lines and luckly the wires were for my knock sensor, which dosen't seem to throw a code. I hate chipmunks......................
