I just converted my Mallory dual point distributer to an electronic dist. by installing the Mallory conversion kit along with their high output coil and TAYLOR spiral wound 8mm silicone spark plug wire . The distributor has mechanical advance. The engine is stock except for the 390 carb and OFFY intake. Manual says initial timing is 2 degrees before TDC, but my timing light shows it's firing way before that at idle. It's running smooth and pulls great on the road. Is there a "trick" to timing a distributor with mechanical advance?

If runs fine where it is and you don't have any heating issues or pre-ignition than leave it alone. Flatheads tend to run hot because the timing is retarded from the factory so running it a bit advanced lets it run cooler.

    Jim,

Do you have a vac*** gauge you can double check it with? I've always like to set them up with a timing light, then use the Vacuum gauge to fine tune it.

A lot has to be said for the engine running fine and not overheating and no pre-ignition.......run it for awhile and see what happens..............if its a electronic programmable dist............ WITH a mechanical advance......DO NOT SCREW WITH THIS SETUP unless your really into turning wrenches..........this system is not for the beginner to be messin' with!!!!!!!
