A few months ago me and a group of rodders were on the interstate thru town on our way to a run. Maybe 6-8 cars. We were running about 70 or more (speed limit 55 in town). TN state trooper pulled up beside me and nodded. We did not slow. He hammered his cruiser and went on ahead. When we got to the rod run everyone in our group said the trooper gave them the nod too. I don't think he was looking for windshield wipers... Drive Drive Drive..

A couple of times I've seen signs at local get togethers that say "No burnouts, please" because locals were unhappy about the noise and concerned for their safety. But I've never seen "Check your wipers and horn". Behave yourself and you can get a lot of leeway.

Just like anything else, it really depends on the individual person (cop, in this instance). Some will give you a break and some won't, but if you don't give them a reason to cite you, my experience has been that they won't ding ya with a ticket.

That said, even the mellowist cop will nail you if you're doing shittys in front of a church with your flamethrowers on.

For sure in the last ten years i has gotten a ton easier to run wild stuff around here.

  15. My experience is that most people in law enforcement are decent human beings, and a good percentage of them are car guys. There are several HAMBers who wear the badge for a living. Only time I've ever been stopped in either of my HAMB-friendly vehicles was a few months back when a local Barney Fife here pulled me over for "improper tag" because he didn't know the law on Year of Manufacture tags for '70 and older model vehicles. He was a nice enough guy, told me that he has a '70 Chevelle SS that he shows, I educated him on the law, told him how to go about registering a '70 Georgia tag to his Chevelle if he can find one.

That being said, I wouldn't expect the law to look the other way if I were driving something with obvious safety defects. You're supposed to have wipers because it rains sometimes. It rains on the just and the unjust, and windshield wipers really do help when it's raining. A horn? If you can't figure out how to wire up a horn, maybe you've got a buddy who'll do it for you and not tell anybody you couldn't figure it out. You need turn signals to communicate your intentions to other drivers, and few people under 75 recognize hand signals. As for ride height, a roadworthy car or truck has to be able to handle the occasional flaw in the road surface. It needs to be able to handle a driveway entrance that dips down a little, and it's probably a good idea to have enough clearance underneath that you don't get hung up on a railroad crossing with a train approaching. Tires need enough tread on them to resist hydroplaning when you hit a puddle in the road. Tires sometimes go flat, so you don't need suspension components or other stuff under the car hanging lower than the bottoms of the wheel rims. Police are doing you a favor as well as doing their job if they pull you over for stuff that could get you or someone else killed or seriously injured.

Bottom line: At least around here, if you don't do dangerous stuff on public roads and don't have glaring safety defects in plain sight, Andy and Barney won't bother you. They really don't want to get out of the air conditioned comfort of their patrol car on a hot muggy day or get out in a pouring rain if they don't really need to.

Do you remember what steps you took to find the the HAMB? Just do them in reverse order and go ask your questions somewhere else!

  19. Never could understand how someone could have the talent and skills to build a car from the ground up and yet not have the ability to build it so it's legal to drive. It ain't that hard to add a few lights and buy decent tires. And no horn? I drove for two days with the horn relay fuse blown and finally changed it in a store parking lot because I wanted to blast it like 20 different times at idiots on the road and couldn't.

I guess if you want to run illegal then move to Hazzard County so you only have to worry about outrunning one idiot cop and his two idiot deputies. But make sure to get a horn that plays Dixie when you jump over their cars to get away.

Ha Ha you people are hillarious spell check.
Remember only dickheads call other people dickheads!
How about steering people in the right direction instead of running them off the road.
To many people taking about wipers and horns working but over looking seat belts because they were not an option so not required. Sounds backwards to me.
But always consider if anything is not legal on your car even if it didn't cause the accident you may be considered at fault. Don,t give people reason to deem our cars unroadworthy. A hotrod is never done until it is safe for passengers and others. Our hobby does not need any bad publicity.

Seems like this thread topic pops up every few months....the "How cool are cops in your area?" Alot of cops are workin on something in the garage, too. If you dont act like a dickhead or drive like an asshole they dont care. Believe it or not alot of times there is bigger things for them to worry about instead of if you are running straight pipes or not. A few do but for the most part just smile and wave.

And X2 on someone just using the page to ruffle feathers.

Ok, I will try to over look the stupidness in the post and answer the question. Its common sence, here in Bako it only rains about a third of the year the rest it just never does, so if a cop sees you running around here without wipers and defroster the two thirds of the year it doesent rain then he couldent care less or doesent notice. Were you live im sure its different, its common sence. Bad tires is just stupid, if you just got a car driving for the first time and you want to take it around the block, ok, but the freeway or any kind of real miles is just dumb. If your car is so low it gets beached on speedbumps then yes it would get the cops attention. If you are bragging that it is 100% illegal because you think its cool, and judging by your responce to everybody elses advise then I have a feeling that you will get alot of crap.
