Can the early Ford front hydraulic brakes ('37, '40, etc.) be converted to self-energizing Bendix-style brakes by simply changing out the wheel cyl and hardware? Or, do I have to go $$ aftermarket? I'm an idiot and bought an F-1 brake setup to mount on my early spindles before realizing they wouldn't work with my early Ford wire wheels. I've heard there are spacers available to mate the F-1 brakes with my wires, but I really don't wanna screw up the strg geometry by offsetting the tire centerline that far away from the kingpin. I would rather just get the correct drums/hubs that'll work with the wires - but, I would prefer the self-energizing brakes without paying Speedy Bill 600 bux + shipping for a new setup. Any help would be appreciated. C'ya - RAY
I'm betting that by the time you chase down all the vintage parts, refurb and rebuild them, and get everything working correctly Speedy Bill's setup (Wilson Welding) will start looking pretty good and not nearly as pricey as you thought. If you save a hundred bucks it'll be a miracle. Chasing down and refurbishing vintage parts has its rewards as everyone on this board can testify but saving money is usually not one of them.
Someone did a tech on here how to do it. It does take a fair bit of work though...cutting and welding backing plates to work.
