OK, go to Harbor Freight and buy a gravity feed HVLP for about 60 bux. It is an ok gun for guys that paint once a year. I used mine for primer and paint. I have sprayed with mine for 3 years.

House of kolor has an excellent video about candy apple painting. Even if you do not intend to shot candy colors just yet, it still is an excellent learning tool.

It covers block sanding, gun set-up(conventional not HVLP) and technique, color sanding and polishing a**** other things.

I think it is kinda pricey, but the paining technique shown is really helpful for any type of paint you might shoot. Helps so you don't go in blind like I did on my first paint job.

Here's what the guy at HOK told me on setting up your HVLP. I took a seminar a year ago.

    He said 6 at 6.

Huh? 6 wide inch pattern at 6 inches away from the material. Good rule of thumb.

Strange that you mention ****** Knuckle Kar Klub, Chuck, I was dismembering my truck's bed, wondered how many car clubs have been called "Busted Knuckles". I've more close calls with those stubborn bolts 'n nuts in the past 2 days...
As for paint advice, I'm new at this, too, but have been told to have a water - watch me screw this advice up - have a water tube connected, to make sure too much water/moisture from the mix doesn't get sprayed on. Something like that. What's the word for it? Water filter?
    Hope that helps.

    PBR,

I was in the same boat as you about a year ago. I bought a HVLP gun, a Campbell Hausfeld from Wal-Mart. For being a $50 gun, it sprays really well and is pretty forgiving. Do get the HVLP gun that has the can on top of the gun. Mine is on the bottom and I feel that it wastes too much paint/primer when I spray small items. Get a good particulate filter for the bottom of the gun and a little pressure regulator that you can adjust at the gun, if yours does not have one. I started out just by spraying DP90 and what not until I was comfortable with how wet the stuff needed to look and how to avoid dry spots. DP is incredibly forgiving, paint will probably be another story though. Lots of practice.

Oh, don't ever try to clean your gun with water....makes for a big f*cking mess! Not one of the smarter things I did when I started. I bought a $12 gun cleaning kit and keep a can full of paint thinner to clean the gun with when I'm done, then let it all air dry. Makes it quick and easy.

i think you'd be better off to rent or borrow a good spray gun , than get one of those pos's from harbor freight

also dr dano, only clean water base paint out with water, and you still have to run thinner or acetone through after that

    Hey,

'couple questions here! What kinda paint job are you after i.e. black primer, some other mat or semi finish, or a finish something like an o.e.m. job?

How much money do you intend to spend on your painting project?

Both of these questions will help you figger out just what you need, and how much it will cost. Like most things in life, it's a question of money!

Spending a thousand dollars for equipment you'll use once = dumb!
Spending a thousand dollars for material to paint a vehicle that has not been properly repaired or preped for a paint job= really dumb!
