It's AMAZING how little money the original customs are bringing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The car I would have REALLY liked to take home would have been the Jack Stewart 41 Ford......Is the car pretty rough in person???

I wonder how many are going to be in shipping containers headed for other parts of the world. No offence meant to those outside the US, but hope it's none.......

Ralphs losses today, will probably turn into other peoples windfall when(if) the market turns around!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How did this museum thing go so wrong

Druid Princess and boot hill express...boy those seem cheap...I mean all these cars are out of my league, but wow....

I wonder if they could have pulled the plug on the auction once the cars started going for pennies on the dollar?

    It just wasn't their night.

EDIT: I'll second that Tommy Ivo is cool. I emailed him once, he wrote me back and was super gracious. As someone else said, he sounds grateful for your time, instead of the other way around. Total cl***. Not at all what I'd expected.

  6. This is where the market is right now, folks. Reality check - these cars mean the world to us Hambers, but the big collectors are playing it safe for now. 1950s Ferraris, Porsche Speedsters, old Aston Martins - those are again/still considered "safe investments" - our exotic Hot Rods and Customs are definitely NOT the flavor of the month anymore.
Today, your average Hot Rod/Custom enthusiast was able to purchase a lot of value for his hard-earned Dollar. The Revell '57 Chevy for $10,750, Sadd-Teague-Bentley for $110K - Montgomery's Falcon for $17,5K - come on, those are REALISTIC prices.
P.S. Heard a rumor that Al Teague's 'liner might join the Goldenrod at the Henry Ford Museum.

  7. P.S. I took the SCOT blower home . . .

I guess it is bad news and good news. Bad news for the museum, bad news for those who have recently bought some of the high end cars from other auctions, cuz' it seams the margins are no longer there.
But good news for us broke, cheap *******s who are tired of hearing someones rust pile held up by four flat tires is a valuable collectible, that they saw one just like it on Barret-Jackson go for hundreds of thousands. Maybe things do eventually even out.

I Can't even tell you how crazy it was today. Absolutly insane on many levels. Yest the LaJolla went for dirt cheap, but it takes two to bid....and there was only one. I found it quite bizarre that was no particular theme to the buyers. A couple drag cars went for big bucks, and others were dirt cheap. Same for customs, hot rods etc etc.

I know the Mazza roadster went for 52.5 as posted. I was at the last auction it sold at about a year ago....where it sold for 180K plus fees!!!!!!!! Ralph lost almost a million bucks on one car (70 chevelle drag car). He took it all in stride. He's a hell of a guy. Super nice. Super humble.

I had a blast and am still stoked I got to see sooooo much history under one roof. Priceless.

My old '36 was one of the cars in the auction. Untypically, it sold for almost exactly what Ralph had paid me for it in 2006.

and soemting else to consider. Ad 10% for auction fees to all vehicles (15% for parts and memorabilia). Plus sales tax. Prices listed above is NOT including these fees.
    What a killer day.

There was a very nice clone of LaJolla built many years ago. Was this it? I was under the impression that Bradley still owns the car. Anyone have any history? Look through Riksters about it, the clone is there. And wasn't the original rootbeer brown? I also have an old magazine that calls that out but shows it current (at that time, late 80s) dark blue. Confused and curious, but I'd pay 26K for that one no matter what as NOBODY could get there from here for twice that even at todays tanked values.

It's sad when things get to the point where you can't pay enough then the chain gets pulled and it goes away. The only weapon you have to combat such losses is time. I want to feel bad for the losses incurred, but I can't. Why? I don't resent wealth or wealthy folk. I only feel bad that I couldn't be there to take advantage of the bargains. One concours event for any of these a few years from now and you may see a fair return on the investment, but ONLY if that's what it is. This sale is one of the very few ways that invesment ****s that drove things down effect car values. I don't know anything about the owner of most of these and I'm sure he must have had a p***ion for such things at one time. Apparently the times say that the value of cash carries more weight than other things. We were there a dozen years ago if some of you recall. All you can do is be ready for the next boom and get out early.

For those of us who like what we have, valuable or not, we can't lose. Again even if it were the clone (La Jolla) I'd have loved to have it. The best early Chev kustom of the time if not ever if it was the real thing. For my garage, priceless, but I expected $100K more at the hammer.

Question for those that were there, during the auction: Do you think these vehicles would have been hyped more, potentially got higher bids had they been saved for the Scottsdale Barrett-Jackson 2010? I wonder if live TV and all the B/J drama would have raised the buzz factor.

I'm not aware of a clone of the LaJolla...

Yes when Harry Bradley still owned the car it was a dark rootbeer brown (not sure if that it the right name for the color though). Harry sold the car to Jack Walker (who also had Doug Thompson the Hirohata Clone built, and restored the candy? red Harry Westergard 1940 Merc that was also at the auction.

The car was in need of a full restoration and Jack and Harry worked close on this. Jack wanted a differnt dark color on the car and Harry approved the new dark purple for the car. As far as I know this is the original LaJolla.

    More info here
And somebody got a REALLY GOOD deal on that. Such a shame that it went for so little money

I was not there, but I'm not sure more hype would do it. Flat out, it's no longer 2006 and the high flying financial house of cards for a lot of these players has hit reality. Barrett-Jackson should be very interesting this year.

Thanks Rik. Sorry for the reference to your site as I thought it was there. I saw the car in person at the Det Autorama (the clone) and when I found out that was the case I walked away. The cobwebs in my memory tell me the Autorama car was black, and the guy who told me it was a clone, well I believed it.

Sad indeed that the hammer price was so low but good for the new owner, yes? Since I recall who told me that and I can look him up I'm going to research the facts. I'll PM ya with my findings but it may be a while. Thanks again for the correction.

  19. Wow some of those prices are insanely low, what did the Art Gerrick Modified sell for?

The Gerrick modified sold for 24K plus fees.
Jungle Jim's FC with NO engine sold for 57.5K
but the other one WITH an engine sold for only 42.5K. WTF?
Jack Stewart's 41 ford custom coupe only reached a mere 25 large before the gavel dropped.
A couple HAMBers got in on the action. Moriarity picked up Roth's Megacycle. He said it's the 4th time he owned it. It's amazing. The bike alone is worth that.
Megan for a killer flathead manifold. I think Verne nabbed a Von Dutch drill press???

And so many big car guys were there. Bruce Meyer's, Don Prudhomme, Tommy Ivo, One of the Alexander Bros, Darryl Starbird, Al Teague, Barris, Moriarity, Dave Shuten, John D'Agostino, Rick Dore and the list goes on.

Biggest surprise was Little Red Wagon, which went for $500k. Biggest disappointment had to be the Ray Allen/Briggs Chevrolet ’70 Chevelle Super Stocker. It sold for over a million at Barrett Jackson a couple of years ago…brought just $240k today. Other notables; Tom Beatty Lakester - $190k, Benny Osborn Dragster - $130k, Mazmanian Corvette – $225 k, Al Teague Streamliner - $250k. The Jungle Jim FC without engine sold for $57,500, and the one driven by Clare Sanders, with engine, only brought $42,500.

Anyone know who bought the Mazmanian Corvette and where it's headed?

  25. mind numbing isn't it?... but then again it really is just a Model A... that i really love... that's totally historic. i figured it would go closer to $100K

add up the parts values and paying some labor alone on the cars that sold yesterday and the buyers came out like bandits... crazy deals... how much would one pay doing most of the work themselves to recreate the LaJolla right now?

as stated... maybe prices will return to more realistic values again on this stuff... which most of us working stiffs with a wife, kids and a mortgage can afford again.

i know of two 30 coupes bodies that i'd really like to buy right now... but i'm not going to throw six thousand bucks at either of them at the moment.

the reset ****on has been pushed and maybe that's a good thing... for some of us.

Thanks for the updates and prices........this is a rough sellers market right now.......I have tried to sell some stuff locally and via the web and I would rather just hold onto my stuff than take a hit on it.....

I know that I'm a little slow on the subject but I'm not familiar with Ralph. What's the reason that the collection went to auction at no reserve anyway ??? Financial or health troubles or something else ? Just wondering why a guy would opt to liquidate a collection in this market that he was just adding to as recently as last year ?
