Devils Darlin's had their annual car show @ Depot Park in July.

 

The fendered T in the first pic is very cool.

Neat to see a random shot of Pete Chapouris' Chevy, lots of neat stuff. Funny, how when you LIVE in an era, things don't seem as goofy as when you add a few decades.....
Still....good times.....

I was there. You didn't get a picture of my Dad's 40 Chevy though. I don't see it in the overall pictures either. I'd sure like to find that 750 Honda powered T. That thing was bad ***. The 4th picture down is Paul Mcellies (spelling) 41 Chevy. Paul p***ed away about 25 or so years ago, while driving his 49 Cad fastback down East 14th. street. It just drifted over to the curb and stopped, he was dead when they found him. The 41 is still around, but it's in primer, and hasn't been out since Paul died. Dean

It was! ... we were all aware of Lil' John's car building talents ... his many race cars ... and his brown '26 Tall T Sedan from '74:



... but his white '29 hiboy was such a departure from the norm of the day, it really was a "mind-blower" ... and a real "head turner" ... Note that everyone in 49ratfink's pic is looking at the roadster:



... then again, maybe they were all just looking at the pimply-faced teenager taking a photo with his mother's fancy 35mm camera?

 

yeah... ****eras A was the beginning of the end for cool "timeless" cars.

at the time I thought the most amazing car there was the little Honda 750 powered T bucket.

I was born in 77.. Very cool pics!! You can see where the trends were going, some of those cars have an 80's look to them and I only saw one flathead!!!

 

Love that cool Track T. Can't put a name with it though, Maybe Prufer's?

Man I don't say it out loud very often but this seems like a safe place, I love a lot of the cars from that era. A weird transition from 4 cylinder resto rods back to sticking big blown ridiculous motors in everything, on chrome wires haha

No, that was Donn Varner's. (it was the old Roy Brizio track roadster, done up in white with orange splash...Mazda rotary powered.
Your roadster has always reminded me of Roy's 'T'...

Donn bought the car, dismantled it, and parted most of it out. The body, frame, and front end were kept, and it got a Capri V6, (similar to Prufer's)
Car was built at the Industrial Center in Santa Clara, off Lafayette St. Heavenly place.
Shops in a great circle, Covell (Professor Hammer) Lem Tolliver, Donn Varner; they all had shops, 100 feet apart...

Ronny Covell did the metal work, (car still had a gl*** body) but the louvers were very unique; the center line came to a taper at the nose...(Lem Tolliver cut down the center of the already louvered strip of aluminum, then tapered the cut in the center...welding back every louver, and hand filing them...)
Rode to the Mothers Day run with Donn, nearly went deaf from the howl of the Quickie...

That car was typical of Donn Varner's work...perfection in every installment. As usual, prior to the build, Donn did a working drawing of the car: it was on the wall above his workbench in his 'Studio-Shop'.
Donn was credited as being "The Northwest Striping King" in an early R&C magazine.
He was employed at FMC as a mechanical designer...

 

The red '29 Highboy Roadster was built and driven by Jim "Gomer" Gomes...
Noted builder, had a hand in many Nor-Cal builds.
Gomer needed a hand with some issues, I helped out...was glad to do it.

A week later, he called my shop, asked if I wanted the Hemi out of his roadster...
I was just starting out, all my $$ went back into the shop...he said, "No, come and get it. No money between us..."

That Hemi went in my '27 Highboy. Good ol' days...

 

One more thought about that Andy's...I had gone with Joe Cardoza, old friends since 1954...
Joe was (still is) a Bay Area Roadsters member, if any of you know Joe, it was a harrowing ride home in his '29 R.P. LOL (nervous laughter)
