guys, is volvo the only option for steering conversion on a 49'-51' ford? i do realize some have installed rack & pinion steering but i would like to hear some other options and maybe see some pic's of said conversions. the volvo ps. conversion box that is being used usually gets some laughs from most suppliers. even the guys that are into vintage volvos of the vintage needed laugh and tell me almost none of them had ps. because the design worked well without power. any ideas would be great thanks:D

140's and 160's shared same box. 140 was 4cyl and 160 had a 6 cyl. boxes are like hens teeth. anyone else?

we installed a gearheads converted 605 box, DO NOt go that route. search if you are interested in the issues, but the short answer is that they lock up in sweeping turns.

We are working with Jamco on some ideas to replace their volvo kit, but we need to get a car in to do the work on.

    Hey, 55dude,
For a Volvo box try Chapman Motors on Vancouver Island. www.chapmanmotors.ca. They have both styles.

Volvo box alone isn't enough. Fatman Fabrications has a custom drag link and idler arm setup that REALLY improves the steering by correcting the poor stock geometry and losing the ridiculously sloppy stock idler arm.

Be aware that you need to cut your steering column as close to the box as possible to give yourself some working allowance for the Volvo box connection.
Also, until now, you would lose your horn and have to hokey up a ****on on the dash. Blundell Speed and Custom (714-744-1900) makes a column support bushing they call Column Saver and a Horn Saver that incorporates a 360° ground that enables you to retain your horn on the column.
See Rod & Custom August 2009.

Myself, after looking at all the options, I decided to use a Fatman-style MII frame clip with front steer power rack to give myself as many engine options as possible.
Its also supposed to lower the car about 4" but we'll see once its installed.

    Good luck,

How about a couple ropes through the wing windows. Just wrap them around the steer shaft thingy
