wow that yellow coupe sounds good, is a lump idle like that achievable on a stockish motor? that one is obviously heavily modified to run like that.

  3. Thanks for sharing these videos!
That yellow coupe has a Torqueflite trans. The owner makes a kit to adapt the trans to to the "A" "B" engine

That Yellow coupe also has an over head conversion on it to. In my opinion, you wouldn't benefit anything from a cam like that in a stock engine. The overlap of a cam like that in a stock engine would be a horrible disappointment. It would sound cool loping around a show, but on the road, it would be un-drivable.

The best HP improvements you can do to a banger is High comp head, Better carb (s) and then cam. Once you get some compression and better breathing from a head and carb, then you can start throwing a hot cam at it.

A touring cam , or B cam in a stocker will make improvements, but I don't think you are asking about a touring tune engine. ;)

Bill makes another good point, that with the load of an automatic trans, the lope of that engine is accentuated. Not to say that that isn't a bad ass banger, that thing is like a bakery truck, It halls buns.

I am in the process of replacing the tired stock engine in my '31 Closed Cab pickup and installing a 7:1 CR, Riley Two Port inserted Model A engine fed by a Weber 32/36 DGV carb. I was wonder if anyone has ever converted a carb like this to run E85 or if anyone has run E85 in through their Model A. I was thinking of trying something different.
I appreciate any comments or opinions.

  7. A couple of club members ran E85 in a stocker and a mildly modified A. Immediate loss of power, top-end and mileage. Tune all you want, but the ethyl alcohol (hydrocarbon) molecule is tiny and the gasoline (hydrocarbon ) molecule is much larger, and contains much more energy.

  8. This question was also asked on the Fordbarn by someone with the same name and one person wrote that they had run tests and that the E85 association agreed that E85 was not a good choice for model "A" engines, But that post did not ask about running it in a 2 port

  9. The Yellow coupe had/has a Cragar and was also a daily driver. Beside manufacturing the trans adapter kit he used to do things like widen Kelsey wheels not sure if he still does.

I may save the story until next month's meet. I need a few days to get over the trauma...

  15. That seems to be where most break, I had 2 break at the same place. Both were counterbalanced and drilled "A" cranks.

maybe stupid question but cant you remove the crank journal bore both sides out make a new journal and press it together weld or pin it . that seems to me to remove the weak area

  17. Interesting thought. Must have been tried in the past but I have never heard of it personally in regards to the "A'"B". I remember back to my motorcycle days when one modification recommended for Matchless and AJS 30/50 (500CC's) singles was to "pin the wheels". For the uninformed this meant to put a pin through the flywheel and crank pin so the flywheels could not rotate individually as they were just pressed together. We would take them apart and turn the 2 flywheels to the exact same diameter and then assemble and indicate them to zero runnout. I do remember automotive cranks that were pressed together. If I remember correctly they had needles on the mains or at least on the rods. I once owned a Porsche Super with a "Hurth" crank that was made that way.

I have over 10,000 miles on mine. Used shell bearings on mains and rods in a B block but it has never given any trouble.

  19. Hey guys,

I'm hoping to be joining the ranks soon with a '28 Chevrolet 4! I'll also be heading to Hershey next week-

Any advise on what parts to search for (sparkplug make/model, distributor, carb, etc)?... and if for some reason, I find a gentleman with a table full of Winfields for $25 a pop (Lol), which throat size is best suited for that engine?

  21. Well i have stepped out tof the ranks of the model A hot rod croud. In the last week or so i have really assesed what i want to do and what/where my money would be best spent. Since i am building a family ride. it needs to have a back seat 4 doors and some safety in mind. I put my slant up for sale on sunday, sold it on monday. i had one of my rileys up for sale on tuesday, sold it on wednesday. had a bunch of misc stuff that i was never going to use leave the confines of my garage like a fire sale in a money store and i am down to nothing. All i have left is my b motor, one riley, an s10 t5, double a bellhousing and a fist full of dollars. I made a few calls and worked out a deal, and lets just say in a week i will have one of the rarest 4 doors ford ever produced in my garage. pete and jakes eat your heart out...because its going to be banger powered and it should live up to my screen name...i'll post picks soon
