Anybody ever change out the old turn signal wires and update to 12 volt wiring? I see that Macs sells a kit, but not for a 49. Help

this is a small world...i just spent a day doing the same thing...

though my column is a 50...

blown49 gave me good information on the size of the inner tube...49 was smaller for part of the year and prone to breaking...

let me know how it goes...

Actually the inner shift tube in the '49's is a LARGER diameter therefore the pot metal cast cup under the steering wheel has a larger diameter hole that makes it a weak point. Broke mine about 6 years ago, on an easy shift to 2nd gear, and looked for about 6 months for a replacement to no avail. Finally changed the entire column to a '50 model. Inner shift tube on 49's was about the size of a 1/2 dollar and the '50/'51's are about the size of a quarter. As the pivot pin for the shifter arm is in a different place the shifter arm is also different.

You should be able to carefully dismantle your existing switch, clean and lubricate it and replace the wires with newer 18 gauge wire with thin teflon insulation (except for the horn wire that should be #14awg.)

Here's a link to a thread with a wiring diagram:

If all else fails contact mercuryland.com and see if they have a replacement.

Thanks for all your help, a buddy of mine came over and re wired the column in a minute. He used a work sheet that i got from rob at Rebel wire. Great source for electrical help.
