Edelbrock makes a product called " Gasket Cinch ". most of Auto zone type stores carry it and it is about $5 a can..........smells like rubber cement but works great. Simple brush on with the brush in the cap.

i put a dab of permatex on my finger and smear a very thin layer around both sides of the gasket. it works just fine. make sure you get a glob of permatex on all four corners where the pan rail gaskets meet up with the round rubber gaskets. the olds pans are leak prone in that area...

I've always used real thin lengths of copper wire, (like from an old extension cord or speaker wire). All this new fangled stickum stuff sounds pretty nice though.
