So, I'm helping these Dodge boys finish a Chrysler 300 project, and the conversation lead to the "Hemi Under Gl***" car. A guy there was telling me how he knew of the car and how it is currently under restoration. He then proceeded to tell me how the cars that first had the clear hoods, were, get this...........Made of plate gl***.!!! I called ********, those cars were plexigl*** hoods, not real gl***. So, the argument is.... were there any cars made with a plate gl*** hood.??? I already know the answer, this is to prove a point, that I still cant believe was even discussed. In the morning I will print this, and hand it to him with a smile. Thanks, BISHOP
GM made a lot of clear hoods and other cut/away panels for display cars ALL were plexi-gl***. I saw the Hurst Hemi under gl*** wheelstand completely over, back in the late sixties at Alton Ill.
I wonder about that too. When I told him that the clear hoods, like Chevrolet produced, were plexi, not gl***, he said the originals were gl***.......like real plate gl***. I tried to make some money on the argument.........He would not put money on his word.
I seem to remember seeing my Dads friends 64 Black Impala SS.. with a see through gl*** hood.. it showed off lots of engine.. that was back in the early 70s.. and a friend of mine that had since p***ed in 1978 had a 70 Camaro with a see through hood, with a 402 .. wish I had photos.. they were both outstanding cars..
Plexi-"gl***" has been used since the 30s as display material for autos. A completely plexi-skinned Olds was used by GM in 1939 or so. The new OHV V8 Ford was introduced with a steel hood which had a plexi-window showing the new engine. Various makes, models, of many cars have had this innovative display idea used for many decades. The "Hemi-Under-Gl***" wheelstand cars never had clear hoods of any kind. The name came from the engine being exposed under the huge backgl*** of these fastback Valiant variants, ala famous chef's feature meals..."under gl***".
If he said the hemi under gl*** car had the motor under a "hood" of actual gl***.......****, I think you lost the bet!
in the early 80s , the hemi under gl*** was a big block chevy for a little while , as seen at night of thrills at englishtown semi - hemi under gl*** was our battle cry
The argument goes: Me: "Chevy did some plexigl*** hoods for dealership cars." Him: "Yea, but they were gl***, not plexigl***." Me: "Wana bet some money on that?" Him: "No, but Im right, I can prove it, the first clear hoods were gl***, not plastic.'' Me: "Never was a hood made from gl***, Ill see ya in the morning."
your friend did sorta ****er you into this one. the "hood" meaning at the front where the engine would have normally been i think was painted not sure if it was metal or fibergl***. but where the engine is the "hood" was gl*** dannnngggggggg u got played. sorry for that one too much beer tonight you should tell your friend to join the hamb now and find this whole thread. now if he was talking about the original "hood" he is wrong and tell him to pay up ****er. i thought this car was restored or at least redone and was being taken around and actually ran from time to time. i remember watching this hill climb event that is all vintage race cars on speed a few years ago. hemi under gl*** was there as well. he launched the car stood it up and went about 500 yards then drifted off into the gr*** then into the hay bails. oops
I don't know about the '60s, but when Bob's ****** blew up at Speed World in AZ back in '02 or '03 that window was definately plexigl***...one lucky hamber got to take a piece home for wall art, complete with signature from Mr. Riggle...
Okay, bring in an old piece of plate gl***, break it on the floor, and ask the guy if he really thinks any drag racing sanctioning body would have ever allowed that **** on a race car. I mean there's a reason carmakers stopped using it 30 years before the Hemi Under Gl*** was invented. And since it's not the Hurst Hemi In A Modular House, it wouldn't have any plate gl*** in it. Safety gl***, that's another story, I could see the first one built having a factory rear window in it until they broke a couple and figured plexi would be stronger, less messy when broken, and lighter.
there was also the gm line of shyhawks and a couple (3??) monza's with the gl*** roofs....safety of course.............
