Hot Rods My 32 rolling chassis. done.

Finished the rolling Ch***is Today, it has come up rather nice.

The more I do, the more I'm feeling like a restorer!

drivetrain (except Gearbox) is all 39 mercury, as is steering, pedals,brakes,wheels,caps etc..

I build all my own ch***is components and the only street rod parts on the whole thing are the front P&J shocks.all plating is Nickel.

the car will be a gloss black 32 roadster, fourties style. the body is painted, but not polished or ***mbled yet, will post that when its on.

Hope you all enjoy the photos, Im taking the car to the CHOPPED show in Newstead ,Victoria tomorrow..just to show my handiwork on the ch***is.

I liked the 34 ch***is you did a while back, but this is stunning.

What did you do for a torque arm on the rear? I think I can see a bracket of the left bell, with a tierod end?

What open drive setup did you go with?

Mmmmmhh ....all the early ford suspension and brakes bits in my shed were earmarked for the 27 Roadster, but this makes me want to go that way with the 34 Tudor.

I especially like the steering installation - I'm guessing the Merc one is similar to the '39-'40 Ford steering ***embly? I've never seen clear pics of how it all fits into an early ch***is, and how it clears the V8 heads and manifolds. As well as improved steering, it looks like it was easier to get the headers around that than it would have been around an original '32 box!

The open drive is all custom built, had splines cut in a 39 merc pinion, to suit a toyota yoke, the driveshaft is also toyota, to match the Supra 5 speed.

yep the torque rod is attached next to bell with a bracket and an early ford tierod end. the other end uses a forged lower shock mount and it mounts next to the bushed rear bone mount, which is part of the drop out crossmember.

yeh the steering wasnt easy..and is actually the reason Im running iron heads..most cast aftermarket heads use longer lower head bolts, these would not clear the steering shaft,and I didnt want to remove the steering to pull a head, so Iron heads for now (maybe Wieand cheaters eventually??)
the steering mount plate is recessed into the ch***is nearly half its depth at the front end..meant i had to do this (see photo) for the hoodside to clear!

 

nah , who wants to see a 32 roadster body , this is much more interesting..

I know what you mean about turning restorer, in a good way of course.

Now about those street rod front shocks, you could have got covered ones!

 

nope unsplit bone (did change the yoke to a Model A one, as they are wider)

yeh I saw those So Cal "militant modern traditionalista" ones or whatever they call em..they would look better, want to shout me a pair???

Great work & detail Ben! With all these great cars going to "Chopped" show I'm spewing I can't be there.

 

Good plan on the bones. Makes me cry thinking of all the ones that got cut off and tossed.

Just tape some cardboard tube around the top 1/2 of the shocks and they'll be fine - and some 'chrome' paint.

 

Looks great Ben, but then again we have come to expect nothing less than the best from your meticulous approach, fab skills and conscientious effort/creative thinking !!
